Scream Queens Heads To Asylum For Its Second Season

This Friday, Scream Queens fans let out a collective yelp of joy as Fox announced plans for a second season. This year's horror hit, which brought Emma Roberts, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Lea Michele, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Niecy Nash against a bloody backdrop of twinsets, college hazing, and chainsaws, will resume its campy ways. But this time, in a mental institution.
E! News report that Fox TV Group's co-chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman shared the gory details during the winter press tour of the Television Critics Association. Among the secrets revealed came the info that there are "fascinating and bizarre medical cases" being observed at the hospital where the Chanels now reside. And while we're not sure which actors will be back in action (casting will be revealed at a later date), Walden assured us we'll get some familiar faces. "Ryan [Murphy, the show's creator] intends to bring some of the actors back from the first installment," Weldon says. "I believe they will be in the same characters."We know by now that Murphy loves to shake up casting and plotlines from season to season. But will Scream Queens-in-an-asylum read too close to his series AHS: Asylum? Nope, says Newman. "I don't think it's anything like Asylum, which was set in a period," Newman says. "Medical is an incredibly rich area to tell stories in. Ryan has always loved the medical area, Nip/Tuck I think was a show he really enjoyed the creative on, so it seemed like a great broad area."

Taiwan Elects First-Ever Female Head Of State

In a historic move, Taiwan has elected its first female President.

The BBC reports that Tsai Ing-wen, the leader of the country’s Democratic Progressive Party (DDP), has been elected as President of Taiwan. In her victory speech, Ms. Tsai spoke of a “new era” for the island democracy, particularly with regard to its relationship with China.

The election is significant not only because of the historic import of electing a female leader, but also for what it could mean for the country’s future. Taiwan is officially known as the Republic of China, and while the island is technically a sovereign state, mainland China (the People’s Republic of China, or PRC) sees Taiwan as being under its authority. Ms. Tsai’s party, the DDP, traditionally supports Taiwanese independence from mainland China, something that could cause tension.

China and Taiwan have maintained an uneasy status quo for the past few decades, and President-elect Tsai says that she intends to follow the will of the people in regard to relations moving forward. “Following the will of the Taiwanese people, we will work toward maintaining the status quo for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait in order to bring the greatest benefits and well-being to the Taiwanese people,” she was quoted by The New York Times.

President-elect Tsai is one of a growing number of female world leaders. According the Pew Research Center, the number of female heads of state or government has more than doubled in the past 10 years, but the number remains fairly low, percentage-wise. Data from U.N. Women shows that women account for only about one in ten of the leaders of United Nations member states and most of them are the first women to hold their office. While Asia has a better record than many other regions in terms of female representation at the highest levels, Ms. Tsai will be the first-ever female leader of Democratic Taiwan.

Kris & Khloé Battle It Out Over Breast Cancer Screening

It's Kris vs. Khloé in a new Keeping Up With the Kardashians clip — and the Momager with the mostest seems to have reached an impasse with her middle daughter on the subject of the BRCA test, a genetic screening for cell mutations that can increase one's chances of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

"You should really get on our bandwagon and try and get this DNA test done,” Jenner urges a hoodie-cloaked Khloé.Having none of it, Khloé replies: "Mom, I don't want to is the point. I don't really care."

Someone pick Jenner's jaw off the floor, please. As one might imagine, Khloé's resistance displeases Kris, who calls her resistance to the test "unacceptable," and points out how it might save her life one day. Khloé throws a little kerosene on her mother's fire by saying, "Fact: I'm going to die. You're going to die. We're all going to die."
We'll see how the fracas resolves itself when the new episode airs on E! this Sunday night.

This particular scuffle aside, the BRCA test has been a significant tool as doctors and patients have attempted to become better at predicting a woman's likelihood of developing breast cancer. The test gained particular notoriety when Angelina Jolie used its findings to prompt her double mastectomy as well as the removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes earlier this year.

Buh-Bye, Textured Bobs: Insta Hair Inspiration That's Very NOW

If you're currently in a public place, we dare you to take a look at the hairstyles around you. Do you see a textured bob? Yeah, we thought so. Not in public? Just open Instagram and take a peek. The style is littering your feed, right? That's because they're everywhere.

Now, this is not to say that there is anything wrong with textured bobs and lobs. Heck, half our beauty team sported the look in 2015. But as we coast into the new year, we're on the hunt for the next big trends — and what we're finding couldn't be more different.

Ahead, you'll find 13 Instagram-favorite styles that we love, and will inspire you to think outside the box in 2016. Whether that means trying a geometric cut à la Acne's pre-fall show, adding thick bangs to your chop, or just updating your tried-and-true topknot. Here's to an adventurous 2016.

Sure, bobs look great doused in salt spray, but we think going for a stick-straight geometric style like this has even more punch right now.

Nikisha Brunson sports an effortless pineapple— a style that not only reduces frizz and protects hair, but looks chic in the process.

Beauty tip: Trade in your go-to topknot for something a little more polished, like the style models wore in Tanya Taylor's spring 2016 runway show. It may look difficult, but we assure you it isn't.

Simply twist multiple sections of second-day hair before pulling them into a bun, then secure with a bungee. Don't forget to leave the ends of hair loose, then flat iron, and spray with hairspray. (Or just follow this tutorial!)

If you simply can't put down the texturizing spray, consider a windswept fauxhawk like this one created by hairstylist Riawna Capri.

Blogger Michelle Madsen takes the ombré style to new territories by pairing it with an asymmetrical lob.

Fernanda Ly, a model, who has mastered the art of pink hair, continues to rock the look with razor-sharp blunt bangs and long pastel locks.

We're getting major Stevie Nicks vibes from this breezy, fringe-heavy look created by superstar hairstylist, Jen Atkin.

At Pat McGrath's highly anticipated Phantom 002 launch, writer, editor, actress, and singer, Tavi Gevinson, rocked blue eyeshadow, Twiggy lashes, and a gorgeous pixie.

Identical twins Cipriana Quann and TK Wonder are famous in both the fashion and beauty worlds for their signature look, seen here. We could spend hours staring at their larger-than-life locks, which they twist and style in a myriad of different ways.

Have bangs? Follow blogger Olivia Lopez's lead and try a sleek, low bun. It's incredibly simple for rushed mornings, and will let your bangs take center stage.

Yet another example of a killer pixie cut to emulate in 2016. The best part? A style like this really lets your makeup and outfit shine.

Want to start 2016 with a bang? Blogger Dara Muscat makes a case for a thick, full fringe, which adds a fresh feeling to piece-y waves.

We'll be the first to admit that the cuts at Acne's pre-fall show aren't for the faint of heart, but they do make a solid argument for trying your own version of a geometric chop in 2016. We dare you...

Update: The CBC reports, via a statement from Celine Dion's publicist, that the singer's brother, Daniel, has passed away. Daniel Dion's funeral will take place at St-Simon-et-Jude de Charlemagne church in Repentigny, Quebec, but a date has not been announced. No further details were released at this time.
This story was originally published on Friday, January 15.

A day after husband René Angélil passed on Thursday, Celine Dion may be losing another member of the family.

Dion’s older brother, Daniel, is battling cancer and may have as little as hours or days to live.

'It's very painful,” Dion’s sister Claudette told Journal Of Montreal. “It's a matter of days or hours. It looks a lot like René, he had cancer of the throat, tongue and brain. Our family is very experienced.”

59-year-old Daniel is with his family as they gather at his bedside in hospital in the Dions’ native Montreal. That family includes their 88-year-old mother Therese.

“We are with Daniel, day and night. He is 59 years old, very young to be the end of life,” Claudette told the Journal Of Montreal.

Celine, 47, is the baby of a family that includes 14 children.

It’s a horrible thing to see so much tragedy striking one family.

ET confirmed the news earlier Friday. Dion expects to return to her Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on February 23.

Making A Murderer Lawyers Call Prosecution "Insecure," Forensics Questioned

As many of you know by now, the Netflix docuseries Making A Murderer looks at the case of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man wrongly convicted of a crime in 2003, only to be arrested and later convicted for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach in 2005. Though the case may be old, Avery's former attorney, Jerry Buting, told Peoplethat the show has led to "newly discovered evidence, either fact witnesses or scientific evidence" that offer Avery a chance at a new trial.

But more importantly, Buting said, "The documentary has shown the public for the first time — through the actual testimony of witnesses and statements of participants — how much reasonable doubt there was in Steven Avery's case."

It's the reason he feels prosecutor Kent Kratz has been making the interview rounds to reveal his own new information. Most of which, Buting says, is Kratz "continuing his public misinformation campaign."

"He is making statements he should know are untrue, like claims about Steven Avery's 'sweat DNA' being found on the hood latch of the RAV4," Buting said. "There is no such thing as 'sweat DNA.' DNA is found in all nucleated cells, but there has never been a test to determine that a sample of DNA came specifically from perspiration."

On CBS This Morning, Buting, along with lawyer Dean Strang, who was part of Avery's defense team, continued to shoot down Kratz's claims, which he calls "insecure."

Kratz recently emailed The Wrap to share nine reasons why he thinks Avery is guilty, including evidence and information of Avery's past that was not featured on the show. This includes phone records that show Avery called Halbach three times on October 31, the day she went missing.

"One at 2:24 and one at 2:35 — both calls Avery uses the *67 feature so Teresa doesn’t know it [was] him...both placed before she arrives. Then one last call at 4:35 p.m., without the *67 feature," Kratz wrote. "Avery first believes he can simply say she never showed up [his original defense], so [he] tries to establish the alibi call after she’s already been there, hence the 4:35 call. She will never answer of course, so he doesn’t need the *67 feature for that last call."

“With regard to this for instance," Buting told CBS, "[Kratz] also left out was the fact that [Avery] called and made an appointment to the office. If he had her cell phone number and was trying to lure her, why would you call the office and create a paper trail? You would just call her directly and no one would ever know that he’d come here. Instead, he goes to the office.”
The two also questioned Kratz's DNA evidence once again, with Strang saying this DNA could have "transferred from something that may or may not have been him." This once again raises the question of whether someone had framed Avery by placing his blood in her car.

The lawyers did share some good news for Avery supporters, explaining that since the show, scientists from all over the world have reached out to say “there’s a lot more that can be done” to test for evidence.

“I think his best hope lays in really discovered evidence,” Strang said.

Meanwhile, as Avery's defense continues to refute the prosecution's new claims, some of the original evidence is also getting a second look.

The digital magazine On Milwaukee found a newly discovered court document revealing that a nurse was set to testify during the original trial; she put a puncture in a vial of Avery's blood.

The show had originally positioned the hole in the vial, which was the size of a hypodermic needle, as a sign that the police could have tampered with the crime scene. Buting even called it "a red-letter day for the defense" on the show.

In actuality, nurse Marlene Kraintz said she had taken a sample of the blood on January 2, 1996. Kraintz, who passed away in 2012, wasn't called to testify, because "the prosecution didn't think the defense had raised the blood-hole theory at trial strongly enough to warrant rebuttal."

"Although the documentary suggests that the hole in the vial of blood was significant, everybody at the time knew and certainly the filmmakers had to know that the hole in the vial was put there by the nurse who drew the blood," Kratz told the magazine.

Experts also told On Milwaukee that blood vials such as Avery's are supposed to have holes pierced in their rubber stoppers. According to the experts, that's how the blood gets into the vial, something the documentary doesn't explain.

On Milwaukeedoes, however, note that this doesn't "eliminate the possibility that someone could have planted blood by removing it another way from the 1996 Avery tube — putting a syringe into the already existing vial hole, for example, or by removing the cap."

Zayn Malik & Liam Payne Tease New Music

In every battle, there is a moment when the loyal must choose sides. For One Direction fans, the time may have come.

Late last night, the Twitter account Zayn Updates! posted a video of some music from former 1D-er Zayn Malik. Since his springtime departure from the group, Malik has been working on solo projects and getting into Twitter beefs with his old bandmates. In the video, though, he seems to have a new crew. The camera pans around the studio, showing a whole team working on the track.
Great minds think alike, apparently. Just a few hours later, his former bandmate, Liam Payne, also released a teaser snippet of his own on Instagram. In the video, Payne, who seems to be alone, lip-syncs to a new song and shows off a snazzy new hand tattoo as he gestures along. The caption reads, “Little Song I wrote for fun yesterday.”

It’s no secret that there’s been some bad blood between Malik and his former bandmates since he left the group, but we’re sure that the timing here is just incidental. Right, guys?

Rachel Bloom Takes Down Sexist YouTube Commenters

Rachel Bloom is now the Golden Globe-winning star of The CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but she got her start making YouTube videos. And as she told Seth Meyers, YouTube is not always kind to women.

In fact, when she appeared on Late Night, Bloom talked about a comment that still haunts her to this day.

"And it's not even the worst one," Bloom said. "Because some of them have been like, 'You should kill yourself, you're fat, you die,' just because I'm a woman."

She paused to let everyone take in the joke, which isn't really a joke. "That's what you say to women on the internet," she added. "Because fat people should die and all women..."

Bloom didn't even get to finish her train of thought before shaking her head and taking a shot at what these guys are probably doing while coming up with these comments. Hint: It's with one hand.

But the reason this one particular comment she got from a guy on "College in Pajamas," a video she created with a friend — she assumes it's a guy — has stuck with her five years now is that it's just so subtle.

The comment? "She looks like her butt stinks."

"I don't know if that means 'she looks like she has a stinky butt,' which I do," Bloom said. "As does everybody. Or if it's 'she looks like her butt stinks,' [meaning] 'she looks as bad as her butt stinks.'"

Bloom admits she's gone over this with "numerous people" to figure out what the commenter might have meant. She has even thought about reaching out to the commenter, adding, "Maybe I will tonight."
One person she doesn't have trouble reading, though, is Meyers. Bloom was anintern at Saturday Night Live during Meyers' time at the show, though he admitted he didn't remember her. But she remembered him, prefacing her story with, "No one remembers when someone's pleasant to them."

She then went on to tell a tale about an intern — not her — who got Meyers the wrong salad. When the intern asked if he could get Meyers another, Meyers said, "No, I guess we can work with this," before slamming the door.

But Alec Baldwin did lend Bloom his car one time so she could get coffee in the snow, so there's that.

Refugees Offer Tulips In Solidarity With German Women

A group of male refugees passed tulips out to German women to stand in solidarity with the victims assaulted throughout Cologne on New Year’s Eve.
“Today, we’re spreading flowers to express love and respect for people, for women, to show sympathy with the victims in Cologne and the horrible things that happened New Year’s Eve,” one of the men said in a Facebook video.
Over 170 women filed criminal complaints after being harassed outside of Cologne’s main train station. At least 120 of those complaints include sexual assault claims.

Police officers identified 31 men in connection with the crimes. They originate from multiple countries throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, according to the New York Times. Officials found that 18 of the 31 men accused of the crimes are seeking asylum in Germany. The attacks cost Cologne's police chief his job and fueled tensions over Germany’s welcoming of refugees.
The refugee men giving tulips to strangers are refuting the depiction of refugees as criminals. One man held a sign that read, “The minority does not represent the whole community.” Another told the Berliner Morgenpost, a German newspaper, that there’s 1.1 million refugees in Germany because it’s the only country that welcomed them.
The Berliner Morgenpost posted the video of the refugee men passing out flowers to Facebook, where it has garnered more than 3 million views.
The men promoted the idea that refugees share in the national outrage over the “criminal and savage” New Year’s Eve attacks.

“We, as the refugees, don’t accept these kinds of acts,” one man said.

How Everyone Lost An Outrageous Amount Of Money In 2015

If you’ve ever desperately needed $1.50 to cover a cup of coffee, only to discover that the closest ATM would charge you twice that just to access your own money, you’re not alone. A new report by CNN and SNL Financial found that Americans paid an astonishing $6 billion in bank fees to just three banks in 2015.

Between JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, Americans paid $6 billion on ATM and overdraft fees last year. Even without counting fees charged by smaller banks, that’s an average of $25 for every adult in the country. The numbers are public for the very first time — 2015 is the first year that banks are required to disclose the information.

The situation is so egregious that both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton addressed it in their presidential campaigns. Sanders promised to cap the fees at $2, while Clinton has called the charges “usurious.” The average ATM fee in America is now over $4.Even if you’re super careful with your money, the fees — particularly overdraft fees, which generally top $30 per transaction — are something to be worried about. These fees disproportionately affect the poor, who don’t always have a financial cushion and may find themselves charged outrageous fees on small expenses. A study found that the majority of overdrafts are on transactions under $25. The $30 or so, which then go to the banks, are funds that low-income individuals will not have to spend on other necessities.

If you, like many of us, sometimes find that you have a tenuous grasp on your finances, there are ways to avoid the fees. When it comes to ATM fees, it may be as simple as going a little bit further out of the way to access your own bank’s ATM or using the “cash back” option that many stores offer. When it comes to overdraft fees, most banks actually allow consumers to opt out. It won’t protect you if a check bounces or you keep charging a card after you’re in the red, but it will stop you from taking cash out of an ATM if you’re already overdrawn.

Camilla Hällgren's Tiny Figures Highlight Big Social Issues

A Sweden-based female artist is creating miniature figures in the hopes of making a sizable difference.

According to Mashable, Camilla Hällgren's Little Sweden Art is a series she started three years ago that uses close-up photography to highlight "big issues on a small scale." Some of these issues: "identity,""social roles," and "power relations."

Hällgren — who works as a researcher and professor at Sweden's Umeå University — refers to her photos as "Art Blended Research." This essentially means she seeks to combine art and research to deepen our understanding of the human condition.

"I work with the overarching question: What does being a human mean?" she said. "I suggest that one of the things it can mean, from an existential perspective, is being very small in a very big world."

- May the force be with you!

A photo posted by Little Sweden Art (@littleswedenart) on

Though Hällgren's work is small, it is incredibly detailed. With each glance, you may pick up on something new, which is just what the artist wanted.

The photo above features a small boat called "Hope" that sits within large wooden hands, and is called "May the force be with you," a piece Hällgren says was inspired by the ongoing refugee crisis. It depicts the "vulnerability in having no other choice but to put your hope in other people's hands, and the responsibility that follows."

The issues she covers are broad and the titles of the images rarely give anything away, so each photo will mean different things to different people. It's something the artist has learned to appreciate, putting trust into what her images can say all on their own.

"I have learned that art can be a powerful way to go if you are looking for emotional dimensions, experiential knowledge," Hällgren told Mashable. "Or...expressing alternative world views and disrupting stereotypes."

Meet The Super Oil That's Better Than Coconut

Just when we thought we'd gotten our yearly/lifely dose of skin and hair oils, another super ingredient recently slipped across our desks: mongongo oil. When I first caught wind of the oil — which has been cropping up in hair and skin-care products left and right — my first reaction was, mongon...what?! (Ditto the rest of the beauty team.) It's not necessarily a well-known additive (yet!), but we predict that you're going to be hearing about it more.

The oil is derived from the fruit of the manketti tree (which has the ability to thrive in extreme weather conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa) and has been used for centuries in skin care, according to Anita Sun, an esthetician and co-founder of Dermovia. "The egg-shaped fruit is not only extremely nutritious, [but it] has many useful properties as a super emollient and protectant for both skin and hair," she explains. Each seed contains a good amount of vitamin E (an antioxidant that helps stave off skin damage and signs of aging), as well as nutrients like calcium, copper, and zinc.

Mongongo oil is also high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are known to remain on the skin longer than saturated fatty acids (think coconut oil) or monounsaturated oils (jojoba and almond oils), explains Sun. "[The fatty acids] deliver a protective, emollient layer on the surface of the skin and act as a barrier to prevent moisture from escaping through the pores," she says."These fatty acids can retain moisture and keep the skin glowing, while smoothing out rough texture and diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines." Fountain of youth, is that you?

But it's really the acidic properties of mongongo oil that make it such a standout. The first of which is linoleic acid, which is great for calming inflammation, explains founder of Uma Oils Shrankhla Holecek. If you suffer from redness or eczema of some kind, mongongo is your answer.

All of these benefits piqued the interest of Drunk Elephant founder Tiffany Masterson, who recently began using the ingredient in her brand's products. But it was the alpha-Eleostearic acid (which adds another layer of sun protection) that really won her over. "When you apply the oil to your skin, it actually will create a shield over your skin or hair when it's hit by UV rays," she explains. "When you go outside and you have it on your lips or skin or hair — which is how they use it in Africa, they coat themselves in [the oil] — it turns into a protectant."
DrunkElephant
These were also gamechangers for hairstylist Peter Lamas, who's started incorporating the ingredient into his new hair-care products. "It has sun protection, strong antioxidants, and the minerals are fortifying [to the] the hair and scalp," he says. "It's loaded with vitamins, nutrients, fatty acids, and proteins, which are essential for hair growth, health, and vitality." Basically, adding it to your hair routine is a no-brainer.

Holecek adds that mongongo oil is particularly great for people with inflamed scalps or dandruff, as well as those with dry, rough, or damaged hair; that helps explain its presence in natural-hair brands, like SheaMoisture and celebrity hairstylist Andre Walker's latest line.

Of course, no mention of an "up-and-coming" oil is complete without a holy-grail coconut comparison. While some of the experts we spoke to say that the association would be like comparing apples and oranges — which is true, both oils have different benefits — Holecek has some pretty strong opinions on the matter. For one, she calls out the presence of lineolic acid in mongongo oil as being a major advantage over its coco counterpart.

"I absolutely do see [mongongo oil] rising in popularity, because it provides a set of benefits that coconut oil doesn’t," she says. "This oil has the capability to reduce inflammation, especially when it's mixed with other complementary oils [likes rose, neroli, and tea tree]. It could be truly miraculous for someone who [has eczema], breaks out often, and needs something that calms their skin...Coconut oil is not going to have those properties, it’s just going to form a thick layer around your skin and basically sit there." Mongongo oil is also less comedogenic than coconut oil, meaning it's less likely to clog your pores over time.I absolutely do see [mongongo oil] rising in popularity, because it provides a set of benefits that coconut oil doesn’t.Aside from the skin and hair perks, there's a deeper benefit that comes from mongongo oil's rise in popularity — and that's the economic factor. "There's something good that comes out of purchasing these oils, not only because of their high quality and the way they are taken care of and produced, but also how these small farm cooperatives are being helped by selling these oils to the rest of the world," explains Lamas.

But with this increase in popularity, it's more important than ever to check where the oil is sourced, Holecek urges, "With any oil that comes from areas that are economically underdeveloped, such as Africa, it is important for us, as consumers, to check our sources and try to identify producers that have fair trading practices in place," she explains.

So if and when you hit up your specialty online food or vitamin stores in search of this magic oil, look for the PhytoTrade Africa certification on the label, which will ensure its legitimacy, Holecek says. "Especially as the oil gains popularity, it’ll become more and more important that the indigenous population is not getting exploited, or, you know, paid very bad wages for collection of this nut." With all that we'll gain from the use of it, it's the right thing to do.

Some of the fellows showcased on Hot Dudes With Kittens are bona fide celebrities; others are just run-of-the-mill gents with smoldering eyes and million-dollar smiles — alongside irresistible cats of every stripe, of course. While the account has 116,000 followers and counting, its unnamed creator insists that they just wanted a place to show a love for cats.

“I just love cats... and felt it would be empowering for animals when they are coupled with good-looking, caring dudes,” the creator told Bustle. Any attractive man can submit a photo to Hot Dudes with Kittens, though it helps if “the guy looks like he adores the cat.”
There’s one catch, though. Most of the dudes are white. This said, the creator claims the Instagram account does “not discriminate against anyone.” Hopefully, more diverse men will submit photos showing their love for cats soon.

Restaurant In Hot Water Over "Grilled Cheese"

MAMAembedVia Resto La Mama Grilled Cheese Facebook.
A restaurant in Canada is in hot water over its language — literally. The Resto La Mama Grilled Cheese Gourmet has gotten in trouble with Quebec language officials over the use of the English words “grilled cheese” in its name.

Canada's Global News reports that the restaurant, located in Quebec City, recently received a notice from language authority the Office québécois de la langue française. The office ordered the restaurant to eliminate the English words in its name and menu. Quebec, which holds the largest French-speaking population in North America, requires in its Charter of the French Language that all public signs, including commercial advertising, be predominantly French.

The issue? The words “grilled cheese” and the slogan “enjoy mama” — the latter of which is a play on an old Coca-Cola slogan, which was advertised in English. But the restaurant’s owner, Stephane Rheaume, says that everybody calls the simple sandwich a "grilled cheese," no matter what language they speak. “I’ve never had a client walk in and say they want a ‘sandwich de fromage fondu,’” he told CTV, literally translating the name. The irony? The word "sandwich" itself, another loanword from English, doesn’t seem to be in question.

The French-language website Le Journal de Québec reported that a spokesman for the language authority’s office said that the name of the restaurant was used only as an example and the restaurant would not be required to change its name. But Rheaume believes that it was the media attention that changed the office’s mind. “After further developments and because of all the media attention, it seems that after all ‘grilled cheese’ might not be problematic,” he told Global News.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to the Office québécois de la langue française as a Canadian office rather than a provincial office . Refinery29 regrets the error.

Sex & The City Creator Didn't Want Carrie & Big To End Up Together

When Sex & the City wrapped in 2004, fans were split on Carrie Bradshaw ending up with Mr. Big, the two-timing boyfriend she dated on-and-off for six seasons. Now, Darren Star, the creator of the legendary HBO series, has weighed in with his opinion on their marriage.
In an interview in a new Amazon Kindle Single, Star opened up about his disappointment with the series' ending.

“I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don't ultimately find happiness from marriage,” Star said. “Not that they can't. But the show initially was going off-script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That's what had made women so attached.”
Many fans agree. Carrie vomited in the kitchen sink when she discovered an engagement ring in her ex-boyfriend Aidan’s pocket. She accepted his proposal in season 4, but subsequently broke off the plans when she realized she simply didn’t want to be married. Big even told Carrie in the episode “Just Say Yes” that she’s not the “marrying kind.”

So what changed between seasons 4 and 6? Star allowed the input of other writers and directors to take Carrie’s life in a different direction than he originally intended.
“For me, in a way — and I didn’t [write] those last episodes — if you're empowering other people to write and produce your show, you can't...say certain things,” he explained.

More than a decade later, Star is still unsatisfied with the ending.
“At the end, it became a conventional romantic comedy,” he said.

That said, it should be noted that public relations maven Samantha Jones was the one character who remained unhitched.

Goodness gracious, great Biebs of fire! There are no Calvins to be seen anywhere in Justin Bieber's
latest Instagram posts — a pair of demure selfies from the freshly showered singer wearing only a towel (a nice towel, at that), etched abs, and some freshly puffed-out pectorals.

The "Sorry" singer captioned his shirtless shot "back in the gym," prompting 25,000-plus replies to one photo and 54,400 to its twin. (The first shot is a bit askew and we see a bit more of his face. The second post is straight-on Bieber beefcake and earned more than 1 million likes within the first two hours of its arrival online.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Bieber graced Instagram with another subtle shot of himself, perched on his fire-red Ferrari, his face obscured by his violet bangs and aviators. His drop-crotch cargos and Brooklyn Projects sweatshirt create a contrast to the hyper-exclusive automobile beneath him.

Back to those risqué towel shots: we're quite fond of his slicked-back bangs. With its purple-y hue, this coif's almost got a cleaned-up Jared-Leto-in-Suicide-Squad vibe.

We'll give him this: The hours on the gym floor are indeed paying off.

Adam Driver Goes Undercover On Saturday Night Live

Adam_Driver_SNL_EmbedPhoto Courtesy of NBC.
Before he was seduced by the Dark Side as the intense Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Adam Driver was best known as Hannah’s intense boyfriend on Girls. He has stretched his comedy muscles before, albeit in his typical melodramatic fashion...He co-starred with Daniel Radcliffe in the romantic comedy What If and alongside SNL veteran Tina Fey in This Is Where I Leave You.

But how did the classically trained emo master handle the cut-and-run comedy when he hit the SNL stage for the first time? Did the 30-minute delay from the football game throw him off his game? Here are three of the highlights from Driver's turn on Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Chris Stapleton:

1. Undercover Ren: This video spoof of Undercover Boss has Driver put on his Kylo Ren mask, but only after he goes undercover on the Starkiller Base. Disguised as Matt, a radar technician, Kylo Ren spends a day with his underlings on the First Order’s mega-weapon. Driver, wearing an orange jumpsuit, eats in the cafeteria, interacts with his coworkers, and gets reprimanded by his boss. In typical Undercover Boss fashion, there's a down-and-out worker helped by the bossman. In this case, it's an officer who lost his son. Kylo Ren’s Matt is touched, “Especially since I’m the one who killed him.” Unfortunately, Matt outs himself when he uses the Force to slam a coworker against a soda machine.

2. Aladdin: Cecily Strong is Jasmine to Adam Driver’s Aladdin, soaring through the air on a magic carpet ride. Things start out just fine, with the two singing "A Whole New World." But the vibe goes south for Jasmine real fast. First, a bird smacks her in the face. Then, she’s hit by a stray bomb. “We must be over Syria!” says Aladdin. Driver never breaks character, though there is a goofy smile on his face, even as an airplane dumps its toilet on their magic carpet. Driver and Strong do a great duet — almost theme-park worthy. The sketch loses some of its steam as the magic carpet goes into free fall and has to make an emergency landing, but neither actor gives up on it, smiling all the way to the end.

3. Go To Bed!: Ever wonder what is going on at home when awards winners tell their children to “Go to bed!” in their acceptance speeches? Driver and Vanessa Bayer play Golden Globe winners who do just that in this video short. After the speech, we cut to the kids at home, played by Kate McKinnon and Kyle Mooney. The kids are left alone for the night and are sad, scared, and lonely. A frightened McKinnon asks, “Do you think mommy and daddy are thinking of us right now?” Mooney answers, “I know they are.” But we see Driver and Bayer partying hard. Night turns into day and the kids wake up to see their parents passed out on the couch. “I told you they’d come home,” the little boy says. The best bit of this short didn’t involve Driver, but a cameo from a shirtless Liev Schreiber making breakfast. He tells the kids that he and their parents had a “good, cool time.”

In a heartfelt moment, Fred Armisen made a special appearance to pay tribute to David Bowie. Armisen introduced an SNL clip of Bowie singing "The Man Who Sold The World.""Watching him for me was a life-changing experience," Armisen said. "That night, he transformed live television."

12 Ridiculously Clever Ways To Use Extra Takeout Condiments

$
0
0
While we all aim to cook at home more, a busy work week can thwart the path to our highest of domestic goals. It’s hard not to give in to the convenience of delivery. After all, we’re only a few clicks away from hot meals delivered right to our doorsteps.

Our Seamless obsession is also the reason why our fridges and kitchen tables become stocked with inordinate amounts of takeout condiments — packets and plastic containers filled with all the different sauces of the world. Here’s a helpful guide for how to deal with your condiment cornucopia in good conscience — and make a couple of awesome, home-cooked meals while you’re at it.

Chinese Hot Mustard

What it is:
Chinese mustard isn’t just an American-born phenomenon. Sure, the spicy and bright yellow sauce is a Chinese takeout staple. But mustard seeds, oil, and the plant itself are used in a variety of Chinese dishes. The fast-food-friendly mustard we’ve come to love is a blend of brown mustard-seed powder, water, vinegar, and turmeric (which helps it achieve its vibrant yellow). What results is a tasty condiment that coats palates and clears sinuses.

The hack:
Provided your Chinese fast-food joint throws in a few extra packets, save them to gussy up your next batch of deviled eggs: Replace standard yellow mustard with Chinese mustard for some extra heat. Or, mix the mustard with canned tuna, chopped red onions, and gherkins for a spicy tuna salad.

Nước Chấm

What it is:
Nước chấm is the catch-all name for Vietnamese dipping sauces. But in restaurants, what’s often offered alongside noodles, rice dishes, grilled meats, and fried spring rolls is nước mắm pha, a humble, six-ingredient, fish-sauce-based condiment that gives everything it touches a transcendent umami flavor. But don’t be fooled by the simple pantry items used to make the sauce; it strikes a beautiful balance that is just sweet, sour, spicy, and salty enough.

The hack:
Chances are, you won’t ever have leftover nước mắm pha. (It’s that delicious.) But if you do, it easily becomes dressing for a refreshing cucumber salad. Thinly slice cucumbers, toss with nước mắm pha, and sprinkle with crushed, roasted peanuts.

Peanut Dipping Sauce

What it is:
Made of ground, roasted peanuts and flavored with coconut milk, soy sauce, tamarind paste, various spices, and more, this versatile dipping sauce is featured most often in Southeast Asian cooking but has become a takeout staple. Imagine a savory peanut butter that can be used for dipping fresh Vietnamese summer rolls or satay (grilled meat skewers). Peanut butter fanatics, now you get to have your peanut butter with every meal.

The hack:
Turn leftover peanut sauce into a soul-satisfying noodle dish. Simply cook and drain rice noodles and toss with the sauce, shredded carrots, sliced cucumbers, and bean sprouts. Top with a fried egg or tofu for protein.

Mint Cilantro Chutney

What it is:
In Hindi, chutney means “to lick,” and that’s exactly what you want to do with your plate after you’ve devoured your samosa. One of the most common versions is Hari chutney, a lip-smackingly delicious, vibrant-green sauce made from cilantro, mint, chili peppers, and coconut. It’s refreshing, a little spicy, and just the thing to brighten up the flavors of the Indian snacks and dishes it is often paired with.

The hack:
The next time you get a batch with your Indian takeout, don’t toss out the leftovers. This stuff lasts for a while in the fridge and can easily become a marinade for lamb kebabs. Simply mix the chutney with Greek yogurt and let your lamb chops sit in it overnight before cooking.

Malt Vinegar

What it is: At an English pub or a fish-and-chip shop, you’ll likely find fried fish and chips (fries) doused liberally in malt vinegar. This slightly pungent, light-brown condiment is delightfully tangy and perfect for greasy, fried foods. It’s made the same way beer is, except the fermentation of the malted barley is taken steps further until the alcohol turns into vinegar.

The hack:
Try mixing a few spoonfuls of malt vinegar and Coleman’s mustard into potato salad. Or use the vinegar to pickle vegetables for your Bloody Mary: Blend together salt, vinegar, herbs of your choice, and garlic. Then, submerge vegetables (cucumbers, radishes, or carrots) in the brine.

Tzatziki

What it is: Creamy, garlicky, refreshing, and tart, this Greek dipping sauce is delicious with pretty much anything. Tzatziki is often served in generous amounts with grilled meats, gyros, or as part of a mezze with plain pita. Though its ingredients are super simple (strained yogurt, cucumber, dill, olive oil, and some acid — usually from vinegar or lemon juice), it has a powerful flavor.

The hack: Not only is Tzatziki delicious; it’s healthy. Leftovers mean a convenient, ready-to-go dip for crudités. Or turn it into salad dressing by adding an additional tablespoon of olive oil, shaking it up, and tossing with greens.

Banana Ketchup

What it is:
Is ketchup still ketchup if it’s made with bananas instead of tomatoes? Apparently, yes. Banana ketchup, a popular condiment from the Philippines, is the Frankenstein of sauces and is perfect for dunking fries, burgers, hot dogs — basically everything. When a shortage of tomatoes in the Philippines during WWII threatened the ketchup supply, some serious innovative thinking to replace this mealtime essential took place. Bananas were deemed an appropriate substitute. With a little food coloring, this stuff tastes and looks almost like the ketchup we know.

The hack:
While it’s traditionally mixed into dishes ranging from spaghetti to grilled meats, it’s also great on its own as a dipping sauce. Dredge raw, peeled shrimp in a coconut Panko mix and fry for perfectly crispy finger food, and serve the banana ketchup as a dip. Mix in hot sauce for some added burn.

Gochujang

What it is:
A mainstay of Korean cooking is Gochujang, a spicy and savory fermented sauce that adds a ton of pizzazz (and heat). But keep in mind that it can easily overpower dishes too. It’s traditionally made with red chili, soybeans, glutinous rice, and salt. Once the ingredients are blended to form a paste, the sauce is fermented outdoors in earthenware until the final product is piquant enough to be used. Gochujang adds the perfect amount of heat to stews, soups, marinated meats, and bibimbap— a delectable meat-and-veggie rice bowl.

The hack: You can easily give your meals a Korean slant with your leftover gochujang: Fill tortillas with gochujang-marinated meat, and top with diced kimchi and a gochujang-mayo blend for an extra kick.

Tamarind Chutney

What it is:
Another deeply rich and versatile condiment served with your Indian takeout is the tamarind chutney, a viscous counterpart to mint-cilantro chutney. Flavor-wise, it offers an interesting contrast to the green stuff. The main ingredient is the pulp of tamarind, a pod-like fruit cultivated in tropical regions around the world. This tangy and sugary sauce packs a mighty punch, so a little goes a long way.

The hack:
Not feeling like Indian food two days in a row, but wanting make use of your leftover tamarind chutney? Turn it into a base for a simple noodle stir fry. In a pan, simply sautée a vegetable medley of your choosing, plus tofu. Add cooked rice noodles and the chutney. Cook until the sauce is thoroughly mixed in.

Chimichurri

What it is:
Chimichurri is Argentina’s answer to American ketchup, except it’s green in appearance and the go-to condiment for grilled meats. This herbaceous sauce is a bold blend: a vinaigrette-like mixture of white vinegar, olive oil, and a hearty melange of parsley, garlic, and various green herbs. The word “chimichurri” dates back to the 19th century, when Basque settlers, upon arriving in Argentina, started calling the sauce tximitxurri, which means “a mixture of things in no particular order.”

The hack:
While it goes fabulously with grilled flank steak, it also gives meatless options a major flavor upgrade. Use it to dress roasted sweet potatoes, or atop warm pita with grilled halloumi and tomatoes for some Latin-Mediterranean fusion.

Chinese Duck Sauce

What it is:
This cloying, gooey condiment is an American invention that has become synonymous with Chinese takeout — but only on the east coast. The west coast has yet to embrace this bizarrely addictive egg-roll dipping sauce. Sources say that upon arriving in the United States, Chinese immigrants who opened restaurants tried to recreate a traditional sauce, hoisin, served primarily with Peking duck, hence the name "duck sauce." These early chefs had to improvise with what was available locally, such as applesauce and molasses. And though the sauce's authenticity is debateable, one thing's for sure: It's yummy, and it's here to stay.

The hack:
Despite its name, duck sauce can be a great marinade for barbecue with an Asian slant. Mix three packets with three tablespoons of soy sauce or Tamari, two cloves of garlic, and a drizzle of sesame oil, and marinate an 8-oz flank steak, pork loin, or chicken breast in it overnight.

Tahini

What it is:
If you’ve ever had hummus or baba ghanoush, you have had tahini. If you’ve ever devoured a falafel sandwich, then you’ve definitely had tahini — mixed with yogurt for a heavenly sauce. Tahini is a rich paste made from hulled sesame seeds that’s used all throughout North Africa, Greece, Eurasia, and the Middle East. It adds incredible richness, especially to meatless dishes.

The hack:
If, for whatever crazy reason, you have leftover tahini sauce from your late-night falafel run, simply turn it into a protein-rich salad dressing. Add lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Thin it out with water if necessary, and toss it with romaine, chickpeas, tomatoes, and red onion. Or give your peanut-butter cookies a makeover by substituting the peanut butter with tahini.
