How Influencer Drama Inspired Patrick Starrr's Latest Project

Drama in the online beauty community has felt like a never-ending vortex recently, with controversial makeup launches and feuds that involve 18-minute-long apology videos, tears, and inevitable comebacks. While that trend might make some influencers worry for the future of the industry, it's only motivated Patrick Starrr. The makeup guru, whose YouTube following has grown to over four million subscribers, is hoping to change the narrative by starting his own management agency, The Beauty Coop.

"For me, seeing the industry a little bit shook with the craziness made me want to add a silver lining of hope, and really show people how it should be done by passing along my knowledge," Starrr told Refinery29 following his appearance at the 2019 Love Ball in New York City, where he served as a judge. "When there's drama going down, why not start an agency? Let me show the fact that there is light at the end of this tunnel and that there is positivity to this."

The discord might've given Starrr more of an incentive to start his agency, but drama is simply not allowed in the framework of The Beauty Coop. "It's really hard to stand out on social media nowadays, and I think it's become a trend to lash out or start drama to get recognized," he says. "Not my chickens, not in The Beauty Coop. There's a zero tolerance in the agency." In fact, the agency will drop talent for anything it deems to be "misconduct or outlandish behavior" — a harsh sentence, but one that Starrr feels is necessary to show that you can achieve success without sacrificing positivity. "You don't want to stand out for the wrong reasons," he says.

Courtesy of Patrick Starrr.

As for what The Beauty Coop's talent will be a part of, they'll be learning the ins and outs of the beauty community from Starrr himself, while also getting help with brand collaborations, contracts, speaking engagements, and even equipment to produce content. The YouTuber, who is now known for his elaborate headwraps and confidence in spades, remembers what it was like to be new to the industry and feel scared; now, he hopes to give up-and-comers a support system they can actually relate to. "I've been through it, and I don't think I know any other manager that has had my kind of experience to pass on," says Starr. "In the beginning you're questioning your self-worth, and I want to be able to instill some confidence in them."

In addition to showing new talent the ropes, Starrr's agency has another goal in mind: showcasing a host of brilliant new creatives to the world. "Reinvigorating the community is something that I'm really passionate about," he says. The Beauty Coop has already signed on rising influencers like Zackary Vang, Cohl’s World, and Jose Jimenez — all beauty boys, a purposeful move to send out a clear message of inclusivity. Vang and Cohl booked their first collaboration with Buxom right out of the gate, and Starr shot the campaign photos.

So far, it's been a successful start for the new talent, and a full-circle moment for Starrr himself. "In 2015, I was the first boy to have a collaboration at Sephora with Formula X nail polishes," he says. "It sold out, and it was three shelves of Patrick Starrr. Now, being the mutha and giving that moment to my children for their first collaboration in Sephora? I think that's so badass."

Courtesy of Patrick Starrr.

The running start has already caught the attention of famed momager Kris Jenner, who Starrr says personally reached out via direct message on Instagram to send her congratulations and offer a helping hand with the agency if needed. ("I almost fell and I screamed," he says.)

Now, along with his philanthropy work for the LGBTQ+ community and his own content and appearances, Starrr will continue scouting talent on Instagram for the agency, focusing on quality vs. quantity so that he can dedicate his time to each. Starrr will also remain under his current management, which supports his newest venture. "There's room for everyone at the table," says the 29-year-old.

Even with all the undertakings of a new agency, the Filipino-American hopes to continue to stand for something bigger than himself, and inspire others with his own projects. "If I can walk the red carpet for Toy Story or Aladdin, which has nothing to do with the LGBTQ+ community, I'm winning," he says. "I'm visible to those kids that aren't being heard. If they see that gay, overweight Asian man in a sequin dress, just having that visibility is making moves for the person after me."

But whatever comes "after" the beauty vlogger is far from his agenda right now — no matter how many projects he takes on. "Patrick Starrr isn't stopping any time soon," he assures us. "If anything, I'm just getting stronger."

Now You Can Rent The Runway Inside Of Nordstrom

Earlier this year, Rent the Runway announced that it has reached a $1 billion valuation, making it the second woman-led business (after beauty brand Glossier) to achieve so-called "unicorn" status. The subscription-based, short-term rental model has infiltrated just about every part of our daily lives, including how we shop for clothes, from Amazon Prime Wardrobe to Rent the Runway – and the latter just became even more appealing.

As of yesterday, Rent the Runway users can drop off their rentals in all three Los Angeles Nordstrom local locations as well as the retailer's full-line store at The Grove at designated kiosks, Fashionista is reporting. There are also plans to extend the service to allow users to pick up their Rent the Runway rentals from these Nordstrom locations soon.

"We both agree and are aligned in the fact that pickup, drop-off, styling and fit are important services to customers and, at our scale, we obviously offer an opportunity for Rent the Runway to offer those services to their customers," Shea Jensen, Nordstrom's SVP of customer experience, told Fashionista. "Nordstrom is a company that we look up to that is hyper-focused and singularly focused on service and I think that's something we really are focused on at Rent the Runway as well," adds Maureen Sullivan, Rent the Runway's chief operating officer.

Don't fret if you aren't in the LA area, Nordstrom and Rent the Runway are looking to expand in the future. They kicked things off in LA because it's Nordstrom's largest market. "It's an important market where we have to get it right," adds Jensen. "I think of it more like a starting point rather than purely a testing ground."

"The L.A. market is such a massive market for us and we really haven't had a physical presence," tells Sullivan. "We're going to have really incredible data around who's using [the kiosks], at what frequency, what other services from Nordstrom are they utilizing when they come to drop off, so it really is a treasure trove of data and insights that will help us define the future of the partnership."

Last year, affordable, mass-market brands joined the high-end labels typically offered by the popular service. "While many of Rent the Runway's longtime brand partners — including Jason Wu, Rebecca Minkoff and Prabal Gurung — are joining the platform, several larger-scale players — including Levi’s, J.Crew and Club Monaco — are also partnering with the service for the first time," making Rent the Runway more accessible then ever. So partnering with Nordstrom is just their latest step in closet domination.

12 Tattoos You Should Get If You're A Cancer

$

0

Do you prefer to stay in on a Friday night to cook a new pasta recipe? Have you ever been called the mother of the group? Do you invite your friends over to craft vision boards and then watch P.S. I Love You just for a "good cry?" If you answered yes to all three of these questions, then it could be because you're a Cancer!

Being the fourth sign in the zodiac means a lot of things, but to put it plainly: You're an emotional crab. You love hard and fast, but can also be a loner on your bad days (or good days, depending on how you look at it); you're sensitive (hence the shell for protection) and nurturing; and you always follow your gut when it comes to big decision-making moments. You've got a lot to offer the world, so why not celebrate it with a tattoo?

Being a naturally creative person probably means you don't need a lot of help hunting down the right tattoo for you, but just in case you need a little extra inspiration, we've rounded up the coolest zodiac-inspired tattoos to consider getting permanently inked.

Ahead, 12 tattoos Cancers will love.

No wonder you're tapped into your sensitive side: Your mood is directly controlled by the moon, which has been said to bring heightened emotions to the surface, depending on which phase it's in.

Speaking of phases, with eight in total, you have tons of options for tattoo designs.

Ariana Grande, fellow Cancer, knows what's up when it comes to the sign's deep connection to the celestial body. Just look at her lunar hand tattoo.

You probably have several playlists on Spotify dedicated to "the feels." We'd bet that Maggie Rogers' heart-aching lyrics are on there — more than once.

You may not love drama, but your ruling element — water — does. After all, its intense relationship with the moon is what makes you so temperamental.

Being a water sign isn't necessarily a bad thing. It also means that your creative juices are constantly flowing. So, you're more likely to take a risk on getting a watercolor tattoo than any other sign because, well, you know how cool it'll look.

Your ruling body part (yep, you've got one) is the chest and stomach — making the sternum the ideal spot to get inked.

More importantly, your ruling body part implies that you — Cancer — prefer to follow your gut and intuition when making decisions. In other words, you almost never let fear stand in your way. This tiny script tattoo is a little reminder of exactly that.

We'd bet that you have your mom — and several of her phone numbers (house, cell, and work) — on speed dial. She's your best friend, so why not get a tattoo inspired by your significant relationship?

Since you're naturally a nurturing soul, you're probably the best dog mom of all time — and wouldn't think twice about getting a pet tattoo.

You're also totally obsessed with your friends, so getting a matching tattoo with your BFF is an idea you've mulled over a few times.

A classic Cancer move: Getting a tattoo with your best friend for their birthday. Selena Gomez, who is also a Cancer, and her pals proved it when they all got matching ink for a 26th birthday celebration.

The Message Behind Demi Lovato's New Finger Tattoo Is So Important

$
0
0

When it comes to her taste in tattoos, Demi Lovato is all about deeper meanings and inspirational messages. Her latest addition to her collection of over 30 (and counting) might just be her simplest — but most meaningful — yet.

Lovato recently paid a visit to tattoo artist Daniel Winter to add a tiny tattoo to the underside of her left ring finger. The text, which says "me," sends a subtle message about something Lovato preaches often: self-love. The 26-year-old posted videos of Winter inking the two-letter word on her hand late last night, revealing the final result on her Instagram Story with a succinct message: "Can't love anyone unless you love yourself first."

Lovato posted a black-and-white image of the "me" tattoo later that evening to her Instagram feed, cosigning it with a simple, but heartfelt caption. "Me first," she wrote. "Thank you @winterstone for my new forever reminder.. #i🖤me."

This isn't Lovato's first tattoo by Winter — and likely not her last. In late January, she had the artist tattoo a fine-line rose on the inside of her left index finger, the same month she celebrated six months of sobriety. Even more recently, she visited celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo to recreate a portrait of her great-grandmother, who she called "Mimaw," on her forearm. "This is for you Mimaw," Lovato wrote on Instagram, showing off the new ink. "You at 26 on my arm while I’m 26, and forever. I love you more."

Lovato is gearing up for a massive year, mostly because she's finally releasing her anticipated seventh studio album after her terrifying overdose last summer. Earlier this week, the singer confirmed that her upcoming music will be brutally honest — and tell you what you need to know about her side of the story. “You know what’s great about making an album?” she shared with fans on Instagram. “You get to say anything you want, be as open and honest as possible and finally tell your side of the story regardless of who might not like it...”

Like she said, she's putting herself first — and this tiny bit of text is just another reminder. Still, we're betting that bouquet of flowers she sent herself was a little less painful than going under the tattoo gun.

I Was Arrested For Having Long Hair. Now I'm In A Pantene Ad.

$

When Pooya Mohseni was 19 years old, she was walking around a park in her hometown of Tehran, Iran, wearing a simple black T-shirt and white jeans, when a group of policemen approached her.

The officers took issue with how Mohseni, a transgender woman who was presenting as masculine at the time, wore her hair. To them, it was too long.

"My hair was down to the middle of my ears," Mohseni, now 41, tells Refinery29. "Not very long at all. If I pulled it all to the front of my face, it would come down to the middle of my nose." According to Mohseni, the officers' real problem wasn't her hair. It was what her hair signified.

At that time in the mid-'90s, Iran was a relatively new fundamentalist Islamic state with harsh punishments for things like homosexuality and improper head coverings, many of which are still in place today. While Mohseni lived there, wearing western-style dress (like jeans) was looked down upon, as was presenting in any way that was outside of strict gender norms. According to these officers, Mohseni's ear-gracing hair was more fit for a cisgender woman, and she was thrown into jail.

Almost two decades later, that very same head of hair is making its debut in a new Pantene campaign called "Don’t Hate Me Because I’m #BeautifuLGBTQ," which was born out of the brand's new partnership with GLAAD in honor of Pride Month. In a video for the campaign that can be seen on both YouTube and social media, Mohseni recounts her arrest and declares that "hair is the most visibly transformative part of your body."

In Mohseni's case, that is especially true. It's through her hair — and her arrest for it — that her life ultimately changed. After her parents paid a fine and signed a document promising to cut Mohseni's hair to an "appropriate length," they realized that if they wanted their daughter to thrive, she had to leave Iran. Nine months later, she moved to New York City, where she still lives and works as an actor, writer, filmmaker, and activist.

The day Mohseni arrived in New York, she started growing out her hair without fear. "By that point, I had no question that transitioning would be the first thing that had happened after I left Iran," Mohseni says. "The first and one thing I could do, because I couldn’t start hormone therapy yet or even buy women’s clothes, was grow out my hair. There was nothing else I could control. Hair was the one thing I could look at and think, There you are, the person that I see inside and no one else sees."

Hair was the one thing I could look at and think, There you are, the person that I see inside and no one else sees.

With every inch that grew, her hair became even more meaningful.

"I think for all human beings, hair is our crown," Mohseni says. "When you want to feel sexy, you can do something to your hair. When you want to put out a different image of yourself, that is the first thing you go to. Even when I was a kid, I used to love to run my fingers through my hair because it comforted me. To this day, I do it to calm myself down."

According to Mohseni, growing out your hair is one of the rare, free things that can help a transitioning individual feel more like themselves. "Do you know how liberating that is when we have to ask permission for so many things?" Mohseni says. "We live in a world where gender has markers. When you are trying to express yourself in the gender that you see yourself, it’s the easiest and most visible part of that transition."

The Pantene ad — which Mohseni says would have made her teenage self "lose her mind" — launched just this week, and she's already received positive feedback from LBGTQ+ individuals in Iran, where homosexuality remains criminalized. Despite the fact that transgender citizens there now have the right to have their gender identity recognized by law, and the Islamic Republic of Iran helps subsidize sex reassignment surgery, there is still immense pressure, harassment, and discrimination for trans individuals and those who don't fit into the gender binary.

"We thought we were cool and changing things, but compared to the kids now, it's just amazing," Mohseni says. "They messaged me. They said, 'I want you to know how beautiful I think you are.' It fills me with so many emotions that these young kids look up to me. I look up to them for their bravery and self-expression, and for the fact that those antiquated laws and oppression are still there [in Iran], but I know they can take it on."

Sophie Turner Just Revealed Her Wedding Manicure — & It's So Chic

You wouldn't expect anything less than the chicest, coolest wedding from young power couple Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas. Earlier this week, the pair — who were already legally wed in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas — proved their taste is downright aristocratic when they were spotted checking into the Château de Tourreau, a private palace in the south of France, for their wedding weekend.

From the 18th-century mansion to the A-listers staying there, everything about the nuptials seems perfectly unattainable for the average human, except for one little detail: the bride's nails, which were not the expected French-tipped or nude, but a bright, summery shade of pastel purple.

Ahead, check out an up-close shot of Turner's bridal manicure, a fresh, down-to-earth remix on her "something blue." Plus, find the crème de la crème of lavender and lilac polishes you can buy right now to copy the look — even if a trip to a château in Provence only exists on your bucket list.

Why Did No One Talk About Sexual Harassment At The Debate?

$
0
0

Sexual harassment in the workplace and other areas of our daily lives is an epidemic. Recent surveys have found that up to 81% of women and 43% of men report having experienced some form of sexual harassment during their lifetime.

But despite the issue's seriousness, the topic was entirely absent from both nights of the first Democratic presidential primary debate this week. This was the first opportunity for 20 of the 25 presidential hopefuls to make their pitch to American voters, but no moderator asked them about the subject.

"It's more than unfortunate — it's unacceptable," Jennifer Klein, chief strategy and policy officer of Time's Up, told Refinery29. But it follows a pattern. According to a report released by the organization earlier this week, sexual harassment never came up during more than 4,000 questions in 123 presidential primary debates from 1996 to 2016. Other issues related to gender equality, such as child care and paid family leave, were also largely ignored on both debate nights. Moderators only asked one question about equal pay, which was directed at former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard. (Refinery29 reached out to NBC to ask why sexual harassment was left out, but the network did not respond by press time.)

"These are issues that affect millions of people's lives, particularly women, [and] working families across America," Klein said. "These issues also [have] bipartisan support. On the issue of sexual harassment, 81% of voters view it as a serious problem and the numbers are similar for other [gender-equality] issues. Ninety-one percent of women voters agree that Congress should enact more robust policy on pay equity. These are issues that are clearly important to families, important to voters. ... These are the questions that should be asked in the debates."

The issues also couldn't be more timely. It's been nearly two years since a societal reckoning was ignited by the investigation into Harvey Weinstein 's misconduct. More than 20 women have accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault, misconduct, or harassment — one of them, E. Jean Carroll, as recently as a week ago. A long list of men, including CEOs, public figures, and prominent lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, have stepped down from their roles due to harassment allegations. The #MeToo movement exploded beyond what founder Tarana Burke imagined more than a decade ago, helping reshape how we think of sex and power.

Rep. Jackie Speier, a survivor herself and someone who has called for a congressional investigation into the allegations against Trump, spoke up about the failure to address sexual harassment. "Millions of women and men around the world have broken their silence with #MeToo, demanding safe and dignified workplaces free from the scourge of sexual harassment," she tweeted. "Yet not one question during the debates addressed this epidemic. How quickly they’ve forgotten."

There are still 11 more primary debates to go over the course of the next year. With an historic number of women running for president, and due to the cultural moment we find ourselves in, it's imperative that candidates are asked about this issue. Some of them, like Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand — who has worked on legislation to combat sexual harassment on college campuses, in the military, and in Congress — are clearly waiting to talk about it.

The days when discussing sexual harassment was taboo are long gone. It's time our political process reflect this change.

4th Of July Outfits That Are Actually Stylish

$

0

White jeans, striped bikinis, plaid dresses — these are the things that come to mind when you think of 4th of July dressing. And while we're usually all for ditching tradition and forging our own sartorial paths, this holiday is one of the few times when we're willing to make an exception — and embrace that classic red, white and blue.

With July 4th falling on a Thursday this year (score), we have four days to fit in as many festive looks as possible. But even the most creative dressers struggle to make July 4th outfits look less, well, basic. So to ensure you dress your best this holiday weekend, we took to Instagram for some much-needed Independence Day inspiration.

From flowy dresses made for the beach to hot weather-ready sets, we've found a stylish 4th of July outfit for you in the roundup ahead.

You can't go wrong with a little white dress. But, of course, never forget to add a ~festive ~ mini bag or summer sandal for good measure.

When your go-to summer sundress just so happens to pair perfectly with your favorite summer holiday...

Sometimes an all-white look just doesn't cut it (mostly when barbequing is involved), but that doesn't mean you have to go against the 4th of July dress code. Opt instead for a blue midi dress in a busy print that'll surely hide any spills that occur throughout the weekend.

Can you think of anything more American than a denim tuxedo?

Heading to the beach? Or even better, this yacht? If so, a striped bikini is the way to go. Throw a caftan around your waist and you've got yourself a grade A weekend look.

Picnic blanket but make it fashion (by throwing on a killer pair of boots).

It's pretty obvious that a button-up, knit dress is a summer staple. Make it even better by opting for a style in a 4th of July-themed color and, of course, adding in a bottle of bubbly.

If dresses aren't your vice, give a white matching set a try. This one, which doubles as a pajama set, is lightweight and airy — a.k.a. perfect for spending an entire weekend in 90 degree heat.

Who needs pants when you can make your shirts do double duty?

This look checks off all our Independence Day style boxes.

Why limit yourself to just one R, W or B piece, when you can mix and match them for the ultimate all American look.

We've been wearing 4th of July-themed tie-dye for decades now, but if you're looking to transform your childhood art project into an everyday fashion staple, drop the red and stick with blue and white.

Throw it back to 50s Americana with a smoking hot red, belted one-piece, a silk headscarf and an on-theme pair of retro blue sunnies. To the beach we go!

Crochet dress? Eh. Crochet set? Hell yes. Make yours holiday-appropriate by sliding on a pair of bright red sandals.

Now this is a 4th of July ensemble that we can rally behind.

Charlize Theron Just Brought Back Her Iconic Pixie — & It Looks Amazing

Charlize Theron has made a sport out of surprising us with dramatic new looks. This is a woman who shaved her whole head for her role in Mad Max: Fury Road, after all, and has rocked every length of hair since, from short pixies to lobs to loose retro waves fit for a 1940s Hollywood starlet.

This year, for whatever reason, Theron's been changing her look more rapidly than ever before. Right ahead of the 2019 Oscars, she gave herself a full makeover, swapping out her signature blonde hair for dark-chocolate brown and cutting her hair into a bob that hit just below her ears. For the premiere of her film Long Shot in May, she tried on blunt baby bangs that made her look like the spitting image of Rooney Mara. And now, with the summer heat officially upon us, Theron has gone practical and revisited one of our favorite haircuts on her: the pixie.

Charlize Theron in London Photo: MelMedia/GC Images/Getty Images.

Debuting the look on Thursday in London while at an event celebrating the latest production of the musical Xanadu, you can see how the new look makes her blue-green eyes pop.

While Theron's rocked this kind of look before, most notably in the '90s when she was never not channelling Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted, this pixie is a bit different. She kept her hair a little longer, for one, and also kept a heavy bang she can flip around in the front for style versatility.

Plenty of other celebrities have decided that early summer is just the right time to shed a few inches, too. Kim Kardashian West, Mandy Moore, and Reese Witherspoon have all chopped their typically-long hair into short bobs in the past few weeks alone. Given that a single 90-degree day has us wanting to go full Fury Road and buzz all our hair off, we're considering Theron's latest look a solid alternative.

Pregnancy Acne Is Real — Here's Why It Happens (& What To Do About It)

$

A healthy baby is obviously the best thing to come out of pregnancy, but in some cases, the end result isn't the only perk of the nearly 10-month journey. Some women credit their pregnancy with making their hair longer and shinier, and their skin tone clearer and more radiant. Others experience the opposite of the coveted pregnancy glow: acne.

The skin condition is common in expecting mothers, and while it might seem like a blip on the radar of a much bigger picture, that doesn't make struggling with acne any more enjoyable. "Dealing with pregnancy acne was challenging," says Erkya Hammonds, a marketing professional at Universal Music Group and mom to a 10-month-old baby boy . " I expected this glow that came with being pregnant, but instead my skin got worse."

Hammonds explains that acne put a damper on a time during which she had expected to feel her most beautiful. "I spent a lot of time in Sephora and Ulta looking for products and makeup to cover up my blemishes," she says. "I avoided taking photos throughout my pregnancy because of my skin."

Hammonds' experience isn't isolated, and many experts say that experiencing acne during pregnancy is common. Ahead, everything you need to know about what creating new life in your body could potentially do to your skin — and what to do about it.

What causes acne during pregnancy?

If your skin is breaking out more or worse than usual while pregnant, you can (shocker) thank your hormones for that. "Pregnancy is a hormonal process that can flare up acne," says dermatologist Jeaneen Chappell, MD. "It may also improve acne for some lucky women, but it isn't a condition that is predictable."

According to OB-GYN Carolyn DeLucia, MD, of VSPOT Women’s Intimate Health Spa in New York City, during pregnancy, women experience an increase in estrogen and progesterone. "As time goes on these hormones may stabilize," she says. "One may see improvement in the skin; others may not." Dr. Chappell adds that an increase in androgen levels may cause an increase in sebum production, which can also lead to acne during your term.

For pregnant women who actually see an improvement in their existing acne, Dr. DeLucia says that's due to ovulation — or, rather, lack thereof. "Pregnant women do not ovulate for nine consecutive months," she says. "Their hormones may fluctuate less, therefore improving acne in skin prone to the condition."

How can pregnancy acne be treated?

Most professionals will tell you to connect with your dermatologist and OB-GYN to discuss a skin-care regimen that works for both you and baby. "Acne during pregnancy is best managed by your dermatologist in conjunction with your OB-GYN to ensure the safe use of products and ingredients," Dr. Chappell says. Communication between both medical professionals in this case will ensure that your acne routine doesn't include ingredients that may be harmful during pregnancy (more on that later).

Because of the long list of things to avoid while you're expecting, most experts recommend going as clean and straightforward as possible with your skin-care products. Gynecologist Alyssa Dweck, MD, says that gentle, dermatologist-tested topical washes like Cetaphil might help control sebum and acne production; however, talking to your derm is always the best option for finding the most effective solution.

What skin-care ingredients should pregnant women avoid?

If your pre-baby skin-care routine includes layering topical retinoids, salicylic acids, and benzoyl peroxide, you'll want to put them far, far away for the duration of your pregnancy. "Patients should not use retinol, which is a vitamin-A based treatment," Dr. DeLucia says. "Excess vitamin A has been linked to liver damage and congenital disabilities during pregnancy." That includes isotretinoin, also known as Accutane, which has been linked to birth defects. Dr. DeLucia says that oral antibiotics commonly prescribed for acne, like doxycycline and tetracycline, should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well. "They have been linked to permanent discoloration of developing teeth and bone," she says.

According to Dr. Sperling, taking caution with what you put on your skin is as vital as paying attention to ingredients and medications you ingest. "Some topical treatments can be absorbed into the skin and can present issues during the pregnancy," she says.

Dealing with acne during pregnancy may feel daunting, but with the right safe ingredients and care, the condition can improve. "It gets better," Hammonds says. "My skin started improving when my son was nearly six months old. Since then, I've simplified my routine and improved my diet, and that has helped." Above all, she says, trust the process. "It's hard to see the good when you look in the mirror and focus on the bad, but I would do it all over again for my son," she says. "The journey is beautiful, so be kind to yourself and your skin."

Kamala Harris Is Redefining Charisma

$

Sen. Kamala Harris walked away as the indisputable winner on the second night of this week's Democratic debates. While her takedown of Joe Biden and putting an end to her colleagues' petty squabbling were significant moments (I'll get to those), her performance was a hit for another reason: It marked a shift in our perception of what it means to be charismatic, and why it even matters.

If you want a depressing slate of reading, take a look at the research of how people view charisma. The trope of having the “confidence of a mediocre white man” is actually based in academic work suggesting that men are more self-assured in their leadership abilities after years of social conditioning and therefore tend to exude that unquantifiable personable aura. Women often have to overcompensate with other traits, for example by working harder, in order to be seen as remotely charismatic. You get the point: “Charisma” has historically been seen as a man’s world. (A tall man's world, to boot.)

Why can’t women seem to put forth this mysterious charm? For starters, women are forced to second-guess themselves in a way that men don’t. “In improv, you're told to follow the fear and 'go for it'; if you're going to fail, fail forward!” Jen Oleniczak Brown, founder of The Engaging Educator, an organization that helps women with confidence, communication, and public speaking skills through improv-based workshops, told Refinery29. “Men easily do this, because they're expected to go 'balls to the wall,' and if it fails, they'll get another chance. Women hold back [and] take the extra breath to overthink a choice, because they know this might be the moment to ‘make it.’ And if they don't? They might not get another chance.”

She's playing to win.

Second, in reality, much like “electability” and “likability” — everybody’s favorite campaign-season buzzwords — “charisma” is a load of sexist, racist, ageist crap. It’s a story we've told ourselves again and again over the course of centuries. Our very country is built on the idea that a bunch of rich white guys had some mythical secret sauce and sought-after charm that no one else could possibly conjure. That really couldn’t be further from the truth.

But the good news about charisma being a social construct is that it means we have the power to question and change it — and that’s exactly what Harris helped do in her debut debate appearance.

Harris has already built a name for herself as a fierce public speaker in the Senate, where she’s gone viral for taking Trump cronies to task in an inimitably incisive fashion. Unsurprisingly, her direct style continued on the debate stage. One of Harris’ breakout moments was her zinger in the midst of an early squabble, “America does not want to witness a food fight. They want to know how we're going to put food on their table.”

But Harris' crowning moment was taking former Vice President Joe Biden to task for praising segregationist senators with whom he worked in decades past — and getting him to admit he opposed busing to integrate schools after Brown v. Board of Education by talking about her childhood experiences. "You know, there was a little girl in California who was a part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me," she told him.

Brown explained that, in that moment, Harris did exactly what "charismatic" men are often praised for: She went for it and didn’t let up. “When she wanted to keep speaking, she kept speaking,” Brown said. “And in the end, she brought us in, acknowledged the viewer, and made it clear that she knew we were there. She's playing to win.”

It wasn’t long ago that Joe Biden, with his slow smirk and aviator glasses-wearing swagger, was considered one of the most charismatic politicians out there. But in this week's debates, we saw a different definition of charisma taking form: Women being honest about who they are, where they come from, and what they stand for. Even when it makes men uncomfortable and threatens their precious frontrunner status. And guess what? They all looked presidential as hell.

We’ve got a long road to Election Day, and there will be plenty more "food fights." But when it comes to redefining how our society views women in leadership, we've actually managed to put some food on the table.

L'Oréal Paris Rouge Signature Lip Stain

Matte lipsticks are notorious for their dehydrating, cracking formulas, but we swear this one is different. Thanks to its flexible texture, this liquid formula goes on light, but lasts hours without creating unsightly dry patches.

Revlon So Fierce Mascara

Unless it's waterproof, we normally overlook most mascaras in the summer. Then, Revlon launched this formula that leaves even the shortest lashes lifted, lengthened, and flake-free.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Longwear Cream Eyeshadow

The cream eyeshadow you fell in love with in high school is back and with a better formula. Yes, it still lasts 24 hours (seriously, try it), but with a smoother consistency, so finger-painting this pigment onto your lids isn't quite as messy.

In our series My 6-Figure Paycheck, women making more than $100,000 open up about how they got there and what exactly they do. We take a closer look at what it feels like to be a woman making six-figures — when only 5% of American women make that much, according to the U.S. Census w ith the hope it will give women insight into how to better navigate their own career and salary trajectories.

Today, we chat with a marketing director in Boston. Previously, we spoke to a cybersecurity sales manager in Denver, a financial compliance officer in New York City, and a product designer in San Francisco.

Job: Marketing Director

Age: 29

Location: Boston

Degree: Undergraduate

First Salary: $38,000

Current Salary: $105,000

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

"I wanted to be a CEO of a company. Incredibly vague, but I loved the thought of being a leader. Looking back, I had no idea the time and dedication that goes into holding that role."

What did you study in college?

"I have an undergraduate degree in hospitality administration. I started my MBA but didn't have a strong reason as to why I was pursuing it and withdrew from the program."

Did you have to take out student loans?

"Yes, I only had about $17K of loans, which took me about seven years to pay off. Joke was on me, though, because I was loan-free for only a few years before marrying my husband, who has a pile of medical-school loans!"

Have you been working at this company since you graduated from college?

"I started out in event planning but quickly realized that I wasn't challenged in the role, and much of it felt like manual labor. I then started taking evening MBA classes to make a pivot to marketing, but my salary wasn't enough to sustain classes, rent, and loan payments. I also didn't have much direction and reason as to why I was getting this degree. I cut my losses and moved back in with my parents, withdrew from my program, and got an entry-level job at an ad agency. Starting at an entry-level position at 24 was tough, but I worked extremely hard, got new jobs, moved to new cities, and made my way to a director role by the time I was 28."

How would you explain your day-to-day role at your job?

"I'm an acquisition marketer, which means I manage any and all channels that will bring new customers to our brand."

Did you negotiate your salary?

"I've negotiated every salary except my current. I moved from NYC to Boston, and it was very difficult to find opportunities that would pay my NY salary. I ended up taking a $15K pay cut for a good opportunity."

Is your current job your “passion”? If not, what is?

"It's hard to say, and I've been thinking about this quite a bit. There are moments where I feel extremely motivated by the work I'm doing, and other times where I feel stuck at a day job. I enjoy my job, but I think down the line I'd like to move toward a freelancing role to pursue different avenues."

If you could, would you change anything in your career trajectory?

"I knew junior year of college that I didn't want to pursue hospitality, but I felt that I just had to graduate. I wish I would have stayed another year and switched my major to business."

What professional advice would you give your younger self?

"Every job will have pros and cons. Don't expect any one job to be your 'dream job.' Instead, find a dream team and work with people that will inspire you daily."

One Love Organics Botanical B Cleansing Oil Solid

"I recently went for a facial at Heyday, and the facialist started the treatment with an oil cleanser that smelled divine (but not too fragrance-y) and felt ah -mazing on my skin. I usually don't say a word during spa services, but I had to ask what it was. That's when I was introduced to the liquid version of this cleanser, which comes in a pump bottle. I decided to go for the brand-new, more travel-friendly solid version, and have never looked forward to washing my face the way I do now. I take my time massaging the oil gently into my skin, and it washes away everything while also leaving it softer than ever." — Thatiana Diaz, beauty writer

One Love Organics Botanical B Cleansing Oil Solid, $49, available at One Love Organics

Make Up For Ever Artist Nude Creme Liquid Lipstick

"There's no reason for me to own all the lipsticks that I do, because once I get hooked on one (usually a nude-pink shade), I use it until the last swipe. The latest suspect: Make Up For Ever's Artist Nude Creme. I was intrigued by all the pretty nudes in this range, but what had me signed, sealed, and delivered was the color payoff and long wear time of the formula once I tried it. One swipe is all I need." — Diaz

Make Up For Ever Artist Nude Creme Liquid Lipstick, $20, available at Sephora

Versed Just Breathe Clarifying Serum

"My skin can be temperamental, so when I saw that this Target brand had a serum 'made for problem skin,' I felt seen — and it's affordable. This serum has done everything it promises: calm inflammation and treat breakouts. As someone with rosacea, I've seen a difference in my redness since I've added this into my routine, and my acne hasn't stood a chance. But the best part is just how lightweight it is, so I don't feel it sitting under my moisturizer at all." — Diaz

Versed Just Breathe Clarifying Serum, $19.98, available at Target

Fenty Pro Kiss'r Luscious Lip Balm

"This gloss-meets-balm hybrid has just the right amount of shine to make lips look juicy while hydrating with oils and butters like squalane and shea. The best part, though, might be the doe-foot applicator, which is plush and perfectly shaped to hug my lips. I know that seems like a trivial detail, but it makes using the product so fun and luxurious." — Mi-Anne Chan, associate video producer & beauty writer

Fenty Pro Kiss'r Luscious Lip Balm, $18, available at Sephora

REN Beauty Clean Screen Mattifying Face Sunscreen SPF 30

"I have a lot of opinions about face primer, but in short, I don't really find them necessary additions to my makeup routine. But in the summer, when things are humid, hot, and sticky I need something a little more matte than my typical moisturizer — so, I reach for a mineral sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens containing actives like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide typically have a velvety finish, but this one is extremely matte while still being relatively hydrating on the skin thanks to the aloe-vera juice and lightweight oils in the formula. I use it as my SPF and moisturizer steps, before going in with concealer." — Chan

REN Beauty Clean Screen Mattifying Face Sunscreen SPF 30, $36, available at Sephora

Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix 24-Hour Cream Color Mattes

"These little tubes of color are quite possible the best cream pigments I've ever used. They're creamy, blendable, and ridiculously pigmented. You can play artist and mix them, blend them together to create a gradient effect, or use them with a liner brush to create clean and graphic lines. The best part? Unlike a lot of face paint-style professional makeup, these ones dry down and don't budge. Plus, makeup artist and founder of the namesake brand Danessa Myricks shares ample inspiration on Instagram if you're unsure of how to use them." — Chan

Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix 24-Hour Cream Color • Mattes, $18, available at Danessa Myricks Beauty

Amika Got Grit Dry Texture Paste

"Since getting my hair bleached and colored almost two years ago, I've gone from a daily hair washer to a weekly one in an attempt to keep my color fresh. While that certainly has it pros, stringy, greasy, lackluster hair around day five is an absolute con. I used this texture paste on a whim a few weeks ago when my hair was at the brink of looking like a soiled mop and was floored. The next day my friends thought my hair was freshly washed. One caveat I will share is that the texture paste has a lot of grit to it, so you'll feel a powdery sensation when you run your fingers through your hair, but that's something I can live with." — Chan

Amika got grit dry texture paste, $25, available at Amika

Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist

"Fellow oily skin types, this one is for you. Tatcha's new face mist refreshes my skin and leaves it looking naturally radiant — perfect for when I want to look dewy, but not too dewy." — Karina Hoshikawa, beauty & wellness market writer

Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist, $48, available at Tatcha

Bumble and bumble Sumo Liquid Wax Finishing Spray

"I have a short, wavy-ish bob that tends to have a mind of its own when it comes to frizz. Bumble and bumble's new liquid wax provides the perfect amount of hold, texture, and grittiness (without any crunch or weight) that makes me feel like the coolest version of my (not cool) self." — Hoshikawa

Bumble and bumble Sumo Liquid Wax Finishing Spray, $32, available exclusively at Bumble and bumble salons

Frank Body Caffeinated Scalp Scrub

"In addition to smelling like a GD dream, this coffee- and rosemary-infused scrub made my scalp feel brand spanking new, and I swear, it even made my hair look healthier." — Hoshikawa

Frank Body Caffeinated Scalp Scrub, $18.95, available at Frank Body

Teleties Turquoise and Caicos

"This cute hair-tie brand isn’t brand new, but new to me. I always keep a hair elastic on my wrist, and I’ve been using a gentle, plastic-coated one for awhile now, for practical reasons — because it doesn’t leave a ponytail crease or get soggy when I wear it in the shower — but more importantly, I really like the way my new Teletie looks on my wrist. I’m especially into the white or the light blue color from the brand’s summer collection. Unless it’s in my hair, I wear one skinny band on my left wrist next to the simple gold wrap bracelet I don’t take off. It doubles as an accessory and kind of reminds me of the rainbow friendship bracelets I’d layer up my arm at summer camp, but obviously much chicer." — Megan Decker, beauty writer

Teleties Turquoise and Caicos, $7.99, available at Teleties

Gucci Beauty Rouge à Lèvres Voile Lipstick

"Like most greedy and superficial Americans, I enjoy beautiful, expensive things. This $38 lipstick, with its gilded tube and lacquered rosebud-print cap, is both. I would happily keep it around for aesthetic value alone — even if it wasn’t the sheer, featherlight flush of color of my dreams, which it is. I’m devoted to Mildred Rosewood, a 'burgundy rosewood' that, in my opinion, is fundamentally perfect. I love her." — Rachel Krause, senior beauty editor

Gucci Beauty 203 Mildred Rosewood, Rouge à Lèvres Voile Lipstick, $38, available at Gucci

Foreo Luna 3

"Sometime last year, I was having a very real problem with hard, bumpy breakouts on the sides of my face that took forever to go away and left dark spots behind. I tried everything: salicylic acid cleansers, benzoyl peroxide spot treatments, chemical exfoliation, crying at the derm’s office… and the only thing that worked was adding a Foreo to my routine. My wildly sensitive skin cannot handle traditional cleansing brushes, but it loves Foreo’s combination of soft silicone bristles and sonic pulsations. I just started using the brand-new Luna 3 and am already obsessed; paired with Maelove’s The Refresher cleanser, my pores have never been so clean." — Krause

Foreo Luna 3, $199, available at Foreo

Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Light

"For me, summer is all about day-drinking in the shade, sweating profusely on the subway platform, and trying — usually in vain — to find the right lightweight moisturizer for the forecast of 100% humidity for the foreseeable future. This season, though, I nailed it on the hydration front with this new formula, a weightless, fast-absorbing take on Dr. Sturm’s beloved Face Cream. It’s super soothing and makes my skin glow, but is so light I can layer my other new go-to, Solid & Striped’s Face Sunscreen, right over it without feeling heavy." — Krause

Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Light, $205, available at Barneys New York

Huda Beauty Tantour Contour & Bronzer Cream

"Recently I decided that I need a signature makeup look. I've always admired women who have a signature power look, like a cat-eye or a red lip. I wanted something that would help me feel confident, can work well with many different outfits, and takes little effort to do. This bronzer is the linchpin in my plan. The mahogany color plays up the natural shadows on my face but sill feels comfortable to wear. I spread it over my cheeks and eyelids, then add a dewy highlighter and a deep brown lip, and it’s the perfect everyday mood.” — Jessica Cruel, deputy beauty director

Huda Beauty Tantour Contour & Bronzer Cream, $30, available at Sephora

COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

"Last year CoverGirl came out with an expanded line of foundation with 40 shades, and now the brand has added a new collection of concealer to coordinate. I rarely wear foundation, so this concealer is my go-to for days when I want to look like I put on a full face but don’t want to put in the effort to actually do so. I spread it under my eyes and around my nose, then set with powder. The final result blends with my skin perfectly without that too-light, ashy appearance that some concealers have. It also wears all day — no creasing and no fading. The only problem: I don’t know when I’ll ever wear foundation again.” — Cruel

COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer, $7.94, available at Walmart

Dr. Jart+ Focuspot Micro Tip Patches

"I'm very fortunate that I rarely breakout, but every three months or so, I get a honker: a huge hormonal pimple on my chin or something cystic on my cheek. Now, I know that popping these pimples is a no-go, so that means I’m stuck with a red, pus-filled orb on my face for a full week. Once it subsides, I spend the next 30 days dealing with a dark spot that’s left behind. This patch cut the active pimple time down to three days, and I feel like the leftover darkness is much less pronounced. The microneedling-inspired spikes are infused with hyaluronic acid, but there's no pain when you put them on. The recommended wear time is two hours but I wore mine overnight. I love that they come in individual treatment packs, so they're easy to travel with, too.” — Cruel

Dr. Jart+ Focuspot™ Micro Tip Patches, $18, available at Sephora

Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint Overnight Moisture Therapy

"I recently went back to my brunette roots, but the damage and dryness of being blonde lingers, making beach trips sort of a nightmare. Before I head to the shore, I usually douse my hair from roots to ends in this hydrating serum that soaks up while I sleep, leaving my hair silky smooth and soft by morning. Even after hours spent in the sun, my hair looks and feels healthy. It's practically magic." — Samantha Sasso, beauty writer

OSEA Blemish Balm

"When I knew I'd be traveling nonstop this month — and my skin would be perpetually out-of-whack and on the verge of a massive pimple — I packed a tiny bottle of this lightweight moisturizer as a precaution. It worked like a charm, keeping me hydrated during long layovers and clear even after I transformed into the hormone monster on my period." — Sasso

OSEA Blemish Balm, $48, available at OSEA

Kinfield Golden Hour

"There are few downsides to summer for me, but one of them is certainly getting bitten by a mosquito. Considering I spent a portion of June in the mountains of Denver, I knew I'd need a plan to ward off any bugs that might leave me swollen and itchy for days. That's where this repellant spray came in. I'm not usually a stickler for non-toxic bug sprays, but this DEET-free formula just happens to look cute, smell really good, and be free of all the bad stuff you don't want to put on your skin — all while keeping mosquitoes away. Bottom line: I'll be getting it in bulk." — Sasso

Kinfield Golden Hour, $22, available at Kinfield

St. Tropez Gradual Tan Watermelon Infusion Body Lotion

"I'm not going to lie, I initially wrote off this lotion, wondering why anyone in their right mind would want their self-tanner to smell like watermelon. Oh, how wrong I was. The watermelon scent is barely detectable; it just smells nice and clean, without the distinctive toast smell of so many DHA products. I smoothed on the lightweight cream for three days straight — I wore it to bed, to work out, and even to work because it's completely clear and doesn't transfer to clothes or sheets — and people keep complimenting my tan. I just wish I had tried it sooner." — Cat Quinn, beauty director

St. Tropez Gradual Tan Watermelon Infusion Body Lotion, $25, available at Sephora

Conair The Knot Dr.

"I love a lot of things about this brush — the flexible detangling bristles, the melt-proof handle, the square shape that makes for easy parting — but the real MVP is the zipper case that keeps your hair from getting on everything you own. My fiancé is also grateful." — Quinn

Conair The Knot Dr. for Conair The Pro Detangling Hair Brushes, $14.99, available at Target

In Common Magic Myst Universal Elixir

"Hairstylist Nikki Lee misted this from my roots to tips after giving me fresh blonde highlights, and you would have never known my hair even touched bleach. My strands looked so smooth and shiny, and the detangling element made for an actually enjoyable blowout." — Quinn

In Common MAGIC MYST UNIVERSAL ELIXIR, $35, available at In Common

Welcome toMoney Diaries , where we're tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We're asking millennials how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we're tracking every last dollar.

Today: a small business owner who makes $50,000 per year and spends some of her money on a dog crate.

Occupation: Small Business Co-Owner (and Part-Time Manager of Client Success for another 11 days)
Industry: International Logistics/Live Animal Shipping (small business) and Interior Design
Age: 34
Location: Austin, TX
Salary: I'm about to start taking a salary of $50,000 from my business (and I'm still making $24/hour at the part time job, which I will be leaving in less than two weeks)
Paycheck Amount (small business is every two weeks and weekly at the part-time job): $1,500 - $2,000 for my business and about $400 from my part time job
Gender Identity: Woman

Monthly Expenses
Rent: $825 (My part of the rent — which includes gas, trash, internet and cable — on a 1 bedroom/1 bath plus a small study I live in with my boyfriend. He plays slightly more because he pays for the garage we also rent where he parks his car and hangs his hockey gear.)
Loans: $0 (My parents paid for my college — I'm extremely lucky.)
Credit Card Payment: $200
Car: $0 (paid off)
Electricity: $50
Netflix: $0 (Boyfriend pays for this)
Hulu: $0 (Don't make fun but we use my boyfriend's ex-girlfriend's mom's account. How she doesn't know we are using it blows my mind, but we keep hanging on... It's been 5.5 years!)
Phone: $75 (my personal business pays this)
Health Insurance: $0 for another 11 days, after that I'll be finding a plan under the Affordable Healthcare Act
Dog Food: $80 (I make my own dog food following the Prey Model raw diet)
Amazon: $11 a month
Savings: Nothing for the moment. I've been using a lot of my savings to live while I've been part-time and I only have about $1,500 left in savings. I'm happy to have a new salary soon.

Day One

3:30 a.m. — Yes. A.M. My boyfriend wakes me up so I can drive him to the airport. He's heading home to the midwest for 12 days. I roll out of bed, put my sneakers on, grab the dog so he can go for a ride, and drive the love of my life to the airport. After a quick kiss, he is out of the car and the dog and I are home and back in bed in 45 minutes.

11 a.m. — I've been waiting for this moment for three years! I tell my boss that I'm putting in my notice of resignation at my part-time job. I've been with the design company as long as I've been working on my personal business. I've been daydreaming about quitting for so long and it is finally here! My boss takes it…okay. Our team has been a little shaky lately and I know she is worried about hiring a new manager because none of our team members are ready to step into a manager role.

1 p.m. — In between my part-time job and doing some personal business work, I go to PetSmart where I buy a travel crate and crate pad for a client's pet I'm working with. I also donate $1 to homeless dogs and cats. ($139.79 expensed)

1:30 p.m. — I then head to Central Market (kinda like Whole Foods but better) and I buy yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, avocados, mushrooms, blackberries, english peas, a bag of lettuce, mint and dill, a ribeye steak, fresh shrimp, Swiss cheese, deli turkey, parmesan cheese, chocolate cookies, and Crackberry ciders. I also donate $1 to hungry families in Central Texas. ($78.60) I don't usually buy steak and shrimp but hey, my boyfriend is out of town and I feel like good food will help me eat at home instead of grabbing food out somewhere every day. On my way out of the grocery store I buy two tacos and an iced tea ($6.55) from a trailer in front of the store. I don't care if I just spent $80 on groceries they are delicious. $85.15

6 p.m. — The rest of my afternoon is spent talking to clients (both actual and prospective), emailing vendors, three calls and countless texts with my business partner, a quick break to throw the ball for my dog in the large field next to our apartment and making some corn and chili soup on the stove. I also crack open a few ciders. I wish my boyfriend was here to celebrate me quitting (he has sent lots of funny gifs and cute texts) and my business partner has a sinus infection. Party of one plus a black German Shepherd it is!

Daily Total: $85.15

Day Two

8:30 a.m. — I wake up with my dog in my face. He is used to my boyfriend taking him out in the morning a good two hours before 8:30 and now has all the energy. I walk him for a good 30 minutes and give him his breakfast. Then I take my thyroid pill and check emails on my phone.

10:30 a.m. — I'm starving and make myself a turkey and Swiss sandwich with tomatoes and peperoncini on the side. I spend the next two hours fighting with a government agency that doesn't want to endorse my client's documents even though they are perfect. Sometimes clients like to point out that we are very expensive. I want to tell them, yes we are! We are a service. Like you don't have to go to a fancy steak house, but you chose to because it's nice and you don't have to cook and someone does everything for you… or I wish people could just hear the conversations (or raging arguments) I have to have with government employees…

12:50 p.m. — The agency has finally endorsed my documents and I pick them up and pay the $38 fee with my company card. ($38 expensed)

3 p.m. — I get home and take the dog to the field for some ball. When we get back, the maintenance team for my apartment is there to repaint my door — a “perk” of living here for four years. I eat the Caesar salad I was going to eat for dinner now for lunch. I settle down to do some more work. Only a few more days of doing two different jobs!

7:30 p.m. — I feed the dog and make myself angel hair pasta with lots of veggies (zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes, peas, mushrooms, and onions) with the fresh shrimp. I should have added garlic but you know, not a professional chef. I finally sit on the couch and watch some old Forensic Files.

10:30 p.m. — I take a bath (something I do daily), wash my face, brush my teeth, and rub that blue aloe gel you buy in the big plastic bottles all over my chest and upper thighs as I got a little burned in the sun last weekend. Then I fall asleep listing to an old episode of the How Did This Get Made podcast.

Daily Total: $0

Day Three

6 a.m. — I wake up and give the dog an almost two mile walk. I'm going to have to leave him for a long time today and I'm already feeling bad. I grab my laptop, the crate I purchased the other day, and the documents I got endorsed yesterday and head to my best friend/business partner's house. We hop in the company-owned mini-van and are on our way to Houston by 7:30.

8:15 a.m. — We are both not feeling great. She has a sinus infection and I think allergies are hitting me hard this week, so we stop at the first Bucee's on the way. For y'all who aren't from Texas, Google Bucee's right away — it's the best gas station, food stop, random Texas paraphernalia rest stop. I grab two breakfast tacos and spicy verde salsa, and a large iced tea and T. (best friend/business partner) gets a breakfast sandwich (no egg) and a Diet Pepsi.) $13.23 expensed)

10:30 a.m. — We pick up my client's dog (she is so sweet!) and head to the airport. We make one quick stop to get some ice to fill the dog's water bowl for her flight to London. Did I tell you my business is to ship pets and other live animals all over the world?

11:45 a.m. — Check-in at Lufthansa for the dog is a breeze (which usually IT IS NOT!). We get all the paperwork done and then take the dog to cargo to get her in her crate and ready to depart. I pay her airfreight $579.38 with our business credit card (expensed).

1 p.m. — We make it to a Starbucks in time for me to hop on a video meeting for my other job. T. buys me a green iced tea.

2 p.m. — After my meeting, we head out of Houston but first stop at Tacos A Go Go. I get a pork belly taco and a shrimp taco. T. gets chicken and carnitas and we share guac and chips. We check out the cute store next door, but I get a client call right as we walk in, so I spend 20 minutes talking to her about how to get her cats to Germany while T. finds a cute beach hat to replace the one she ruined at the beach last weekend. ($27.45 expensed)

5 p.m. — Finally home! The dog jumps on me as soon as I walk in the door and I quickly throw my purse down and take him for a hike down to the greenbelt. We are lucky that my apartment literally backs up into 800 acres (yes I just had to Google that) of nature and trails and a creek that runs through central Austin. After 1.5 miles, we reach the creek where I throw the ball into the water and he swims for a good 30 minutes. We then hike back home. He's happy and I'm exhausted!

8 p.m. — I reheat some pasta from yesterday, send exactly one work email, take a bath, and then pass out. I miss my BF. He's with extended family this evening, so we can only text. I do remember to water all his plants, but I'm sure somehow they will die anyway because I kill all plants.

Daily Total: $0

Day Four

7:30 a.m. — The dog wakes me up and this is usually when I would roll over and cuddle with BF, but since he isn't here I make the dog get in bed with me to cuddle even though he desperately wants breakfast and to go for a walk. I give in to the dog and get up at 8.

9 a.m. — I have to make dog food today, so I head to the grocery store before it gets to busy. I buy two bags of chicken quarters, hamburger meat with low fat content, two packages of carnitas, two packages of chicken strips, calf's liver, sweat breads, and chicken hearts (all raw). I also get two bags of frozen mixed veggies, two bags of frozen mixed berries, and two cans of pumpkin. I add $1 donation to hungry families in central Texas. $61.21

9:45 a.m. — When I get home I make dog meals by spreading out 24 empty quart plastic tubs and adding a chicken quarter and a little bit of everything listed above also adding in some green tripe and an organ blend we purchase in bulk from a local raw dog food company. I also add a fish oil pill and an allergy pill. Let me say here that raw or non-cooked bones are very healthy for dogs. Feeding Prey Model raw is all about getting the perfect percentage of protein, bone, and organ. It took a little figuring out at first and a lot of weighing meals, but I can do it by eye now and it doesn't take that long. A few meals go into the freezer in the house, but most of them I take to the deep freeze in the garage.

12:30 p.m. — I grab the dog and we drive to the dry cleaners to pick up a dress I left there about a week ago. When I'm halfway there, I remember the other two dresses I was going to take with me that are on my bedroom floor in a bag. I fail at being an adult. I pick up the dress. $17.02 seems a little stiff, but they did get out a gnarly stain of soy sauce and some sort of alcohol. $17.02

12:45 p.m. — Dog and I go through the drive-through of a local burger place. I get a veggie burger and a large iced tea ($6.52) and the dog gets a large doggie bone (free). $6.52

4 p.m. — I drive to way north Austin and drop the dog off with our pet sitter. I'm leaving for Houston again tomorrow (for the business) and it will be an overnight trip so the dog needs to be looked after. N. (dog sitter) was the one who fostered him before we adopted him and he loves seeing her. I also say a quick hello to “New Dog” who is a Dutch Shepherd we are going to adopt once my boyfriend is home next month. I'm so excited to bring him home!

4:20 p.m. — I meet a friend at The Roaring Fork for their happy hour. I tell her all about quitting and how the business is going and then we talk about our families and how we keep in touch with old high school and college friends. I really enjoy our conversation. While I have a lot of acquaintances, I don't count a lot of people as close friends and I feel like we could be close friends. I have a dirty martini and she has a French 75. We share guac and she insists on picking up the check.

6:45 p.m. — Back at the house. It's so weird to be here without my boyfriend and especially without the dog. I eat some turkey, tomatoes, and avocado. I watch some Great British Bake Off episodes that I've seen too many times already. Take a bath. Slather my burned boobs with blue aloe goo and pack a quick overnight bag. I go to bed at 10 listening to some My Favorite Murder podcast back episodes that I haven't listened too.

Daily Total: $84.75

Day Five

5 a.m. — Another early day! I wake up, brush my teeth and throw on some leggings and a t-shirt. I take my pill and my hair goes up in a pony. I'm at T.'s house by 6 and on the road by 6:30. The plan for the day is to drive from Austin to San Antonio, pick up two cats and drive them to Houston where the cats will board overnight before we check them in on a flight to Panama the next day. Since it's a long weekend, T. and I decided to invite two other friends to come with and book a nice hotel. We love the work and we are finally at a place financially within the company to enjoy a trip to Houston with a hotel upgrade and a nice dinner.

7:30 a.m. — We stop at our first Bucees of the trip and I get my usual breakfast taco and a large Diet Coke. ($4.76 expensed)

10:00 a.m. - We have picked up the cats and are on our way to Houston. They are sweet cats, but man are they talkers in the car! We stop at Bucees number two and I get a large iced tea this time.

1:30 p.m. — We have dropped the cats off at the boarding facility. We snap photos for the client and arrange with the staff that we are going to pick them up early the next morning. We then make our way to the Houstonian Hotel, Club, and Spa (prepaid for a month ago). It's too early to check in, but we change in the hotel bathroom and head to the pool. Not going to lie there are a little too many children running around for my taste. There are three pools and one is supposed to be “adults only,” but there are lots of kids and no one seems to be enforcing the 18 and up rule.

2 p.m. — We decide to combat the kiddy parade by buying overpriced drinks at the pool bar. Miranda our bartender feels our pain and give us generous pours. I get a bloody Mary and then a mojito and tip generously. $38

5 p.m. — Now kinda drunk, my friend Y. and I head back to the room where we (stupidly) order mac and cheese from room service and I inspect my previously burned skin. I don't think I've added any additional harm and I made sure to keep my hat on the entire time. $12.50

9 p.m. — Dinner! Finally! The hotel has a private shuttle that will drive us anywhere within five miles ($5 cash tip). We find a place to eat, but they close at 9 because it's Sunday. With Monday being Memorial Day we totally forgot that places will close early tonight. We end up at North Italian and eat all the pasta. I get the pesto chicken pasta and a side salad and T. gets a side salad and meatballs. We all ordered a meat and cheese board for the table and T. and I get it on our tab. T. also has a glass of wine. Please note: We usually are not eating dinners like this during out work trips, but this is a weird weekend when we are working and with our friends. ($89.28 expensed) $5

10:30 p.m. — The shuttle driver deposits us back at the hotel ($5 tip) and we head to the room and I fall asleep quickly. $5

Daily Total: $60.50

Day Six

5:45 a.m. — T. and I are up and dressed (quick and quiet so we don't disturb our other friends) and we get in the car to head to the boarding facility to go get the cats AND...we have a flat tire. UGH! We then realize that we don't even have a spare in the car so we can't change it ourselves and get on the road. Lyft it is. ($26.12 expensed)

7 a.m. — M. (our Lyft driver, who is the sweetest) picks us up and is totally fine grabbing a few cats in crates and helping us get them to the airport. We get to the boarding facility and pick up the furry kiddos. Since M. doesn't want another Lyft driver to accept our drive from the boarding facility to the airport we tell her we will pay her cash for the ride there and then back to the hotel. Once we get to the airport and we are checking the cats in we realize that their paperwork was left in the minivan back at the hotel! I get in the Lyft with Brandi and she drives me back to the van to grab the documents while T. stays with the cats.

7:30 a.m. — T. has called AAA and they are waiting for me when M. rolls in. M. stays with me while AAA pumps our flat tire full of air. It seems to be holding so hopefully that will get us to a tire shop. But M. and I don't have time for a tire shop now! We rush back to the airport with the documents.

8:30 a.m. — Docs and at the airport. Cats are checked in. T. and I are back in M.'s car heading back to the hotel (again). We have to have her stop at a Chase ATM, so we can get her cash for all her help. Seriously she was amazing and so helpful. We pay her $160 (expensed) which she is super thankful for.

9:15 a.m. — T. and I make it in the van to Firestone and luckily it was just a nail that they were able to patch and we don't have to buy a new tire. Have I mentioned WE ARE STARVING! ($37.93 expensed)

10.30 a.m. — We are now ready to eat all the things and end up at Dish Society. I order a scramble and a side salad and T. gets a chicken sandwich and a side salad. We then decide we also need an order of beignets and mimosas. Again, stressing that we usually eat like Chipotle and Newks and burgers on the road (or we pack a lunch). We didn't need quite this fancy of a meal and God knows we weren't dressed for brunch, but it's been a weird morning. ($52.11 expensed)

12:30 p.m. — Back at the hotel to join our other friends for one last hour around the pool and then we change and check out. Friend Y. drives home and I sleep in the back seat. On the ride home T. sells a last minute move for tomorrow! This is great because money… but it means we literally have to drive back to Houston tomorrow morning.

6:15 p.m. — Since we are heading back to H Town tomorrow, I decide not to pick up my dog and instead let the dog sitter watch him for two more nights. She says he is getting along great with New Dog which really makes me happy. I take her two more dog meals then head home where I eat some veggies and cheese, take a shower, and spend three hours working. Then bed and I'm so excited to sleep. I put on a Lore podcast and pass out.

Daily Total: $0

Day Seven

6 a.m. — Another early day. I get up, brush my teeth and throw on clothes. I'm at S's house by 7 and we at the designated meet-up spot with our client at 7:30 AM to collect her dog who is moving to Italy. She an older dog, but a world traveler. This little lady has lived on 3 continents!

8:15 a.m. — We are making good time so we stop in a tiny Texas town on the way to Houston and get breakfast tacos (two for each of us) and diet cokes from a Mexican trailer. T. walks the pup while I pay. They are delish! ($13.48 expensed).

12:20 p.m. — We are almost at the airport so we make one last stop where I grab some ice for the dog's crate. ($.79) I then sit in the car while T. does the check in and answer emails. June is getting really busy! I'm so glad I only have a few more days at the part-time job. I can't wait to answer emails from only one email inbox. $0.79

12:40 p.m. — While I'm answering emails I hear from my boyfriend. His grandmother is not doing well and they think the end will come sometime this weekend. I remember our first date when he talked about how being close with family is so important to him and how much he specifically loved his mom's mother. I try not to cry, but hearing him sigh and sound so defeated makes me tear up. He might have to stay in the midwest a little longer. We talk about if I should fly up, but we decide to play it by ear.

1:10 p.m. — We get to our pet-friendly hotel, check in, and fall onto our beds. T. and I are exhausted. We both work for about an hour and a half and then she naps and I play on my phone. I am working with another pet shipper in Singapore and we send multiple emails back and forth about a funny client we are both helping.

6:15 p.m. — Our breakfast tacos were a long time ago. We hit up a local sports bar and each grab a beer and a cobb salad. It's probably just okay, but I'm craving green, healthy food. Mmmmmm lettuce. ($42.68 expensed)

9 p.m. — We are back at the hotel and head down to the pool and hot tub for a dip. I end up just putting my feet in the hot tub and T. and I work on finding a hotel in Houston for two weeks from now when T.'s sister will be in town and coming with us. We want it to be within our "normal Houston" budget, but also nice enough for T.'s sister to hang out in while we work. We leave the pool after about an hour. I then try to Facebook stalk my new friend, but can't find her and end up falling sleep quickly to House Hunters International. Before I close my eyes I text my boyfriend, "I miss you".

All The Times Doug Emhoff Was Kamala Harris' Ultimate Instagram Husband

$
0
0

Sen. Kamala Harris was the clear winner of the second presidential primary debate on Thursday night. The California Democrat spoke clearly about her platform, launched into some zingers, and engaged in a powerful exchange with former Vice President Joe Biden over his record on racial issues.

We're going to go ahead and speculate that one of the reasons for her success — along with her background as a seasoned prosecutor, her diverse campaign team, and intense pre-debate practice  — was the Power of Love™. We are, of course, referring to the support of her husband Douglas Emhoff, who frankly puts most other "Instagram husbands" to shame.

Ahead of the debate, the self-described "hubby/stan" (really, that's his Twitter bio), posted a picture of the couple looking at each other lovingly. The caption read, "Dear ⁦@KamalaHarris⁩: I love you, I believe in you, and I’m so proud of you. The whole country is going to see what I get to see every day. You are amazing."

Emhoff's social media is dedicated to boosting his wife's profile. Here he is taking a selfie in front of a TV playing Harris being interviewed by CNN's Jake Tapper.

Selfies are kind of the couple's thing.

Here they are embracing on their anniversary last August.

After the debate, in an effort to raise campaign funds, Emhoff addressed the "#KHive" — a.k.a. Harris' biggest supporters — with some of the strongest Dad energy we've seen. (Dads are the only ones who dorkily point out that green rooms are not, in fact, green. We don't make the rules!)

Emhoff also made news recently after wrestling away the mic from a protestor who took it from Harris as she was speaking at a forum in San Francisco. He later tweeted: "Thx for all the kind notes. We are good. I love ⁦@KamalaHarris⁩ and would do anything for her."

" I would do anything for her. " My dude!

He'll also do anything to help amplify her voice.

Putting my time in at the booth...

A post shared by Douglas Emhoff (@douglasemhoff) on

Emhoff, an L.A.-based entertainment lawyer, met Harris on a blind date set up by one of her closest friends. After nearly a year of dating, they got engaged in March 2014. They married a few months later in a courthouse. Emhoff also has two children, Cole and Ella, who have taken to calling Harris "Momala."

On the campaign trail, Emhoff tries to keep the couple's spark alive even when things get hectic (and they always do). "I’m doing everything I can to help Kamala with the campaign, whether on Twitter, attending events, or rallying the team behind the scenes, all while keeping up with my full-time day gig as a lawyer, all while keeping our relationship and family first," Emhoff previously told Refinery29. "Date night definitely looks a little different these days, but we are still trying to maintain our 'coupledom' by enjoying whatever time we have together, even if it’s on the trail, and always with a sense of humor."

Maisie Williams Just Made A Huge Change To Her Look Before Sophie Turner's Wedding

$

In case you haven't heard, Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas are getting married — again. The couple technically exchanged vows in May in a Las Vegas wedding chapel (a mere two hours after the Billboard Music Awards), but are reportedly having a more formal — and much more chic — ceremony this weekend in France with family, friends, and most importantly, Maisie Williams.

Out of all the guests confirmed to attend the Turner/Jonas nuptials, Williams is perhaps the most anticipated: She's not only Turner's former onscreen sister on Game of Thrones, but her real-life best friend — who also happens to be in Turner's bridal party. While it was never a secret that Williams would be attending as one of Turner's maids of honor, it did come as a shock when the 22-year-old arrived to the pre-wedding events with bright pink hair.

We should've been better-prepared: Since wrapping the final season of GoT, Williams has experimented with a spectrum of hair colors, including lilac and pastel pink. She once told Rolling Stone that she dyed it mostly so she could take a break from working. "It’s a pretty good way of stopping that. And it just feels so good, so me," she explained. "I’ve battled my whole adolescence with trying to put a stamp on my appearance, but also be a blank canvas as an actor." Even so, this appears to be her boldest transformation yet — and just before her BFF's wedding, to boot. (Anyone else getting flashbacks to 2014, when Kylie Jenner refused to hide her blue hair for Kim Kardashian's wedding?)

What makes the new look even more surprising is that just two days ago, she didn't have the pink at all. As seen in photos on the Daily Mail, the actress spent the last week vacationing with boyfriend Reuben Selby in the Seychelles with blonde hair. Better still, it seems that Selby copied Williams' brand-new look almost exactly, arriving in France alongside his girlfriend with freshly-dyed pink hair, too. Although this isn't the first time the two have matched their hair colors (he also had bleach-blonde hair on vacation), this is the first time we've ever seen it done deliberately for a wedding. These Joyful Photos Celebrate The Beauty Of Trans Women

Fifty years ago today, the Stonewall Riots of 1969 marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. As we celebrate Pride, it’s important to remember that trans women of color including Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy were at the forefront of the movement. As model and activist KhrystyAna puts it, “This is Pride month; a month we would not have without trans women of color. Yet, despite half a century of progress, trans rights still fall behind those of others in the LGBTQ+ community, with trans women of color remaining the most vulnerable members of the queer community."

KhrystyAna teamed up with photographer Amanda Picotte, model Seana Steele, and stylist Guvanch (all four of whom are part of the LGBTQ+ community) to create this photoshoot celebrating trans women. The photos are part of the KhrystyAna’s Real Catwalk Project, dedicated to throwing out conventional beauty standards and championing inclusivity. Thirteen trans women, including Steele, posed for photos wearing high fashion pieces in pink, blue, and white to represent the Trans Pride Flag.

The 13 women featured are Daniella Carter, Alexandra Lee, Daria Dee, Mojo Disco, Jasmine Infiniti, Alana Jessica, Jari Jones, Shay Neary, Jazmine Shepard, Seana Steele, Garnet Rubio, Angelica Torres, and Nicki Vrotsos.

The photos are beautiful and joyous — very different from how the media typically portrays trans women. “The elegant and elevated aesthetic is purposeful, aiming to provide needed representation that is not objectified,” KhrystyAna, who directed and produced the shoot, tells Refinery29.

Along with being photographed, the women featured here shared their stories and their thoughts on what Pride means to them. “I’ve been deeply affected by the tragic events that trans communities have been experiencing. Now more than ever, I want to highlight the voices of trans women,” KhrystyAna says.

Trans women are living more visibly, which is a blessing and a curse. On one hand, we are integrating into mainstream society, which humanizes us and allows people to be more compassionate. This translates into resources. But on the other hand, people are seeking us out, looking hard for us, to harm us.

Every day brings another challenge with safety, with consent, with medical care, with housing. As a trans person, it never stops. The system we live in was not built with us in mind, so every day we have to go against the grain just to survive. As a Black trans woman who happens to be very successful in media, I too still have to fight for bare minimum resources.

Cis people need to no longer be surface allies. Saying you love trans people or marching for trans people is no longer enough. Trans women, especially Black trans women, are under attack. We are being killed at ever-growing rates. You need to be willing to get hit for a trans person; you need to be willing to shield their bodies. You need to pay trans people. You need to not be an ally, but a warrior.

My experience as a trans woman in 2019 is vastly different than my experience was a decade ago. While I have what we call "cis-passing privilege " now, but that was not always the case. I experienced transphobic harassment and abuse from family members, schoolmates, and even complete strangers. Despite now being able to walk down the street and not be called a 'man' or a "faggot," I still deal with being discriminated against when I disclose my trans status to people… especially cisgender heterosexual men that express a romantic interest in me.

In terms of love, dating, and relationships, living as a trans woman can often be a very lonely life. What I long for more than anything is for cisgender people, no matter their sexual orientation, to allow themselves to let go of their biases towards transgender people. They need to realize that we simply are human beings trying to exist in a world that viciously continues to deride, attack, and murder us for living authentically as ourselves. I wish with all my heart that more cisgender folks would lend their allyship, love, and support to us in a time that still feels as though we as trans people are at war with the entire world because of our gender identity.

The biggest difficulty I have encountered as a trans woman is my journey to learn to love myself. With so much hatred, not only from the rest of the world but even our own community, it is difficult to not give up. However, time and time again, I remind myself that who I am is NOT a hindrance — it is a blessing.

Being trans has taught me so much about how to relax and simply be a human being who not only loves myself but everyone around me. This life has given me patience, love, and an all-around thirst to know more about the world around me and the people within it. To all of the trans women and men who have paved the way before me, I say thank you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself and to continue paving the way for future trans people who can eventually evolve into a life of peace.

Cis people need to realize that gender isn’t that difficult of a construct to tear apart, because it is so easy to create. The more fluid our culture becomes, the safer it becomes. I’m not asking cis people to change their gender, I’m simply asking them to not judge mine. Gender is built on such fragile foundations. Find what makes you comfortable, and run with it. For you, it may be jeans. For me, it’s a floral dress.

Educate yourself. You live in a time where you can find information by speaking into a piece of technology that tells you the answers. If you don’t know, ask. If you don’t understand, study. If you don’t have a theory, have a discussion. You can’t learn otherwise. Ignorance is an excuse in which one chooses dirt over water, while complaining they’re thirsty. Drink up!

I have privilege as a cis-passing white trans woman, but I still have lost family and supposed friends after deciding to transition. Dating has also been really challenging, between dealing with fetishization and facing rejection under the guise of wanting children that cis women unable to conceive would never have to face. Ultimately, we are people. We deserve the same things cis people do — love, happiness, health, and most importantly, safety. Trans women are women and our rights are simply human rights. Listen to our stories and stand up for us by showing support. Help put a stop to transphobia by calling people out on their remarks and actions instead of being complicit through silence.

Some things are better than they were 50 years ago; there is definitely a lot of awareness and the younger generation is a lot more open-minded. But still we see trans women of color being murdered. So far in 2019, 11 Black trans women that we know of have been murdered and this has to stop. Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Laverne Cox, Tracey “Africa” Norman, Janet Mock, Caroline “Tulla” Cossey, Andrea Pejic, and many other trans women have inspired me to live with authenticity and demand respect from a world that so often ignores or shuns us.

As a 25-year-old trans woman of color, I can only imagine some of the things my sisters went through 50 years ago. However, things are far, far from perfect even now. Progressive cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles can seem like safe havens to a young trans person who may be growing up in far more dangerous and harshly judgmental area of this country. But, even here in NYC, I’ve run into violence and discrimination.

When it comes to discrimination, my problems, as a trans woman of color, are threefold: I’m African-American; I’m a woman; I’m trans. Each one of these things comes with its own burden, but when combined, it increases the chance of both discrimination and acts of violence. I’ve suffered sexual assault numerous times, without help from a justice system that wasn’t attuned to the plight of a trans woman of color.

However, there is hope — in the slowly-growing networks of LGBTQIA+ social and governmental organizations that helping to create outlets for young trans people, and in the media and institutions of learning that are slowly educating people. Compared to 50 ago, it seems as if things may be getting better for our community. But it still feels like a crawl at times, when I wish it was more of a sprint.

This Is How Much A Pro Makeup Artist Spends On Her Acne-Fighting Routine

In a world saturated with products, treatments, and information for people with acne, nailing down the right skin-care routine can feel overwhelming — and expensive. That's why we talked to real women about the real cost of keeping their skin clear. Ahead, Yana Marks, a 28-year-old makeup artist in New York City, breaks down exactly how much she spends on treating her acne.

"I've been frustrated with my acne since I was in middle school, and it was a source of a lot of stress for me as a young woman. Giant red eruptions on my skin have always made it hard to feel confident. I have a very fair skin tone, making every dark spot, clogged pore, and inflamed bump super visible.

"When I was 14, I discovered foundation and used it to regularly cover up all of the unsightly marks on my face, which eventually led me to my career as a makeup artist. As a licensed cosmetologist and professional in the beauty industry, I do have a lot more general skin-care knowledge than most, but the acne landscape is still very overwhelming. However, after years of trial and error, I've finally found a regimen that keeps my skin clear and healthy.

"I'm now used to compliments on my complexion vs. constantly worrying that somebody is judging me for my acne. I still get plenty of breakouts under my jawline due to a medication switch, but my morning and nighttime regimens have kept my breakouts at bay, and I've finally come out on the brighter side of my acne journey."

Ahead, find a complete breakdown of Marks' morning and night skin-care routine.
