In the depths of winter, we spend weeks counting down until summertime. Then, July comes around, and it's like a season of Survivor. Sure, the warmer temperatures mean less clothing and a valid reason for ordering iced coffee (not that we needed one), but there's definitely such a thing as too hot — especially when it comes to beauty. We're in constant search for unique ways to disguise sweaty roots, tips to stop our makeup from melting off, and skin-care products with SPF.

Luckily, the hottest releases at Ulta just happen to be summer problem-solvers. Whether you're looking for a do-it-all hair moisturizer that's great for travel or you need a sun-protecting spray that won't ruin your makeup, there's something for everyone hitting the retailer's shelves this month. We've rounded up the best products coming to Ulta in July, so you can spend less time scrolling through new arrivals and more time enjoying the sunshine (from your shady spot under an umbrella, of course). All the newness, ahead.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

These Are The Biggest Financial Health Mistakes You're Making

Branded: Visible - Financial Health

Beyond the more frivolous gifts we purchase ourselves as so-called acts of self-care, the very process of eating, drinking, and, well, existing can add up quickly. That’s why Refinery29’s Anissa Richmond — a self-diagnosed shopaholic — vowed to spend five days focusing on her financial health in the hope of reigning in her unconscious spending.

For some much-needed assistance in the money-saving realm, Anissa called in a financial advisor, who offered plenty of sage advice for each day of the challenge. To start, she recommended that Anissa budget her month’s money in cash and spread it out between envelopes. She also suggested embracing meal prep, purging stuffed wallets of old receipts and gift cards, and positioning banking apps front and center on cell phones, while tucking away the more time-sucking options (yes, that means social media).

Fortunately, some things weren't quite so strenuous — namely, her phone bill. That's because she has Visible — a plan that costs $40 a month, with unlimited data, messages, and minutes. Watch the video above to see how Anissa tackles everything else.

The Chicest Red, White, & Blue Manicures On Instagram

In case you haven't been paying attention to your calendar (hey, we're all busy), let us be the first to tell you: The Fourth of July is just four days away. Whether you expertly coordinated the holiday with your summer PTO and have been mapping out your vacation for the past three months or are still weighing your travel options, Independence Day means an extra blissful summer day off of work — and that in and of itself is worth celebrating.

In the spirit, we're recommending a fresh red, white, and blue manicure. In part because it's patriotic, but mostly because the stars, nautical stripes, and glitter fireworks accents make for the cutest nail art you'll wear all summer. Beyond standard bright-red polish, we've scoured Instagram and compiled a guide to chic and unique Fourth of July nail looks, to give you ample inspiration for your next manicure.

A sheer dusting of gold chrome powder and an accent decal, and all of a sudden your classic red manicure feels super festive.

For this look, you'll need red, white, and blue polishes, a skinny nail-art brush to create the stripes, and a top coat with a touch of shimmer.

You can spot a cool NYC girl on the beach by her minimalist manicure — like this diagonal color play, courtesy of Manhattan's trendy Paintbox studio.

Polka-dotted fingernails are fun and festive no matter the occasion, but feel extra patriotic when they're red, white, and blue.

If you order a pack of press-on star decals now, they'll be at your door well before the Fourth.

Try a milky nude base with bright red and blue accents. Then, find yourself a spot on the hammock.

A double French tip with baby blue and deep red layered together is super understated.

Pick up an Essie polish in the sparkly royal blue Front Page Worthy and get your festive manicure in the time it take to paint one coat (plus dry time).

Elevate your go-to white manicure with blue and red stripes — and pair it with denim cut-offs.

Technically it's not red, white, or blue, but a metallic foil ombré tip is an obvious take on Fourth of July fireworks.

If you fall back on your standard red polish, add a few white stars to take your look to the next level.

We're calling this the tidal take on the Fourth of July mani — perfect if you'll be spending your day by the beach.

Ivanka Trump's Body Language At The G20 Summit, Analyzed

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Many of us have been in awkward networking situations, but few have elevated our fumbling attempts to a world stage, like Ivanka Trump did this past weekend. In a video posted by the French presidential palace, the first daughter and presidential advisor does her best to make conversation with world leaders at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and IMF managing director Christine Lagarde.

The internet couldn't help but notice that Ivanka looked out of place in this circle of heavyweights. As a result, the meme #UnwantedIvanka was born, which shows Ivanka photoshopped "butting into" every imaginable famous scenario, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the characters in Mean Girls walking into school on a Wednesday, wearing pink. ("She doesn't even go here!")

Ivanka's intent may have been to raise her profile by appearing next to world leaders — she has not-so-subtly indicated that she wants to be president one day — but her body language actually betrayed the fact that she was out of her depth in the conversation, body language expert Patti Wood, author of Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma, told Refinery29. With no previous government experience, the president's advisor on women's economic empowerment "didn't have the power level or the experience of those in that circle of people," she said. Her optics game may work when she herself has control over posting the photo or video, but it backfired in this candid, caught-off-guard moment.

It's unclear what the conversation into which she entered was actually about, but the body language was undeniably awkward, Wood said. "She stood slightly outside the circle, in a way that shows she felt unwelcomed," she said. "Also, the group didn't turn toward her to allow her in fully."

A few hints that Ivanka may have felt uncomfortable: She stood with her arms down and behind her, she withdrew her head after talking, and her mouth became tight and turned downward, said Wood. Her body language even suggests that she might have been unhappy with what she said to the group. "Her twirling hands showed she felt she was spinning her wheels and not making traction," Wood said. "She also picked the tips of her fingers in what is called 'self-beating,' as if punishing herself for not doing well. It's clear she wanted to look good, and tried to say something. Considering the power level of the other members of the group, that was very brave. But she also felt she didn’t do well and she feels bad about it."

Note: My husband makes $110,000 a year + bonuses. We don't share an account. He pays for most of the regular housing costs, while I cover our health insurance and the expenses for all three cats and the dogs. We split any large expenses that come up unexpectedly.

Day One

6 a.m. — Time to get up! This morning the HVAC company I have a service plan with is coming to inspect our air conditioner first thing. I take the dog out, feed her, then feed all three cats. They get angry if you don't get to them quick enough, and the kitten tries to steal the dog's food. I shower and get ready for the day. On my way out the door I wake up my husband, R., and the HVAC guy arrives.

8 a.m. — Good news! Minor tune-ups needed, and my husband says he can do them himself (he's really handy!). I eat my breakfast at my desk. Today, it's Trader Joe's gluten-free nuts-and-berries granola, cottage cheese, and fresh raspberries. I send C., my boyfriend, a good morning Snapchat (it's our main form of communication, oddly enough!).

11:30 a.m. — I go for my normal lunch walk and order ahead at Caribou Coffee. I order a sparkling green tea lemonade ($4), one of my favorites. I loaded up my app in advance with money, so it's free. I head back to my office and eat lunch and read a book. Today's lunch is Sweet Earth aloha BBQ quesadillas, which is one of my favorites. I make an effort to walk for 20 minutes during my hour lunch break every day. It gets me out of my office, clears my head, and gives me a boost of energy.

5:30 p.m. — I head home and change clothes, then leave for a hair appointment. My stylist doesn't usually do evening appointments, so I bring her a bottle of wine from our wine fridge to thank her for squeezing me in. I get a partial highlight and a pink overlay in preparation for Pride festivities this weekend. I've been rocking pink hair for about nine months, and I absolutely love it! However, it's a lot a maintenance, and I have to get it refreshed every four months or so. The color is $93, and she refuses to accept a tip since I brought her wine. I have $15 cash in my wallet, so I sneak it onto her station anyway. $108

7:30 p.m. — I get home and show R. my new hair. He shrugs and says it looks nice (typical!). I'm starving but feeling lazy, so I throw a frozen cheese pizza in the oven for dinner. R. and I eat pizza and watch the new Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler movie on Netflix. We head to bed at 9:30, our usual time.

Daily Total: $108

Day Two

6 a.m. — Wake up, feed the animals, get ready for the day, send C. a good morning Snapchat. I pack my breakfast and lunch. I stop at the gas station by my house on the way into work and fill up. I work pretty close to my house, so I usually only have to fill up once every 10 days. I drive into work downtown and park in my contract parking ramp. I pay $80 a month for ramp parking, which comes out of my paycheck pre-tax. $25.82

8 a.m. — I eat my breakfast, which is a Kodiak Cakes microwavable flapjack. They are super yummy and have enough protein to keep me full until lunch. I meet with my boss afterward for my performance review. She tells me I'm a pleasure to work with. We discuss my personal development plan for the next year, which includes advanced leadership training. I get an "exceeds expectations" on my review (which is really good!).

12 p.m. — I take my lunch walk and go down to the midday farmer's market to browse. It's early in the season, so it's mostly lettuce, onions, and other early veggies and about half as many vendors as normal. Nothing strikes my fancy, so I walk to the old-time candy shop. I get myself a butter-cheese-caramel popcorn mix and caramel popcorn for my boyfriend, who I will see later tonight. Caramel popcorn is his favorite. I head back to the office and eat lunch, which is a random assortment of food: leftover baked beans, microwave mashed potatoes, and fresh strawberries. $8.75

6 p.m. — I get home, change, then load up my bike on my car to meet C. for a bike ride; he lives just over the border in Wisconsin. I'm starving, so I grab a piece of cheese to munch on. My husband and I have an open marriage, and I'm polyamorous. I've been dating my boyfriend for about two years, and he and my husband are friends. Mondays and/or Tuesdays are our usual days to spend time together, as well as every other weekend. I meet him (score free parking!) and we bike just over six miles along the St. Croix river on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. It's perfect summer weather: 72 degrees, sunny, and no bugs!

7 p.m. — Biking worked up an appetite, so we head over to one of our usual places for dinner and drinks. We sit outside on the patio so we can enjoy the beautiful day. I have a couple — okay, three — glasses of rosé and a veggie burger with chipotle-lime fries. We hang out and talk and just enjoy each other's company. This weekend he has his son, so I won't be seeing him until next Monday or Tuesday. We split the bill. $48.03

Daily Total: $82.60

Day Three

6 a.m. — Wake up, feed the animals, get ready for work. I'm running late, but I make a smoothie for breakfast anyways: pineapple, blueberries, and coconut water with a scoop of vegan vanilla protein powder with caffeine. I got home later than normal last night and need the energy boost.

10 a.m. — I text my friend about going to a drag brunch in July, since tickets went on sale today. She wants to go and asks me to get her a ticket. I buy two tickets to the drag brunch, which will be Lizzo-themed! We have done several drag brunches before, and they are a blast! You have to buy tickets right away because they sell out quickly. $28.26

11:30 a.m. — I run some documents over to another office, then take a quick walk on my lunch break. I brought lunch again from home today: a Southwest salad and chips and salsa. I'm trying to make a better effort to bring a lunch from home to save money. This winter I got into the habit of eating out every day at work, and I'm trying to break the habit.

5 p.m. — I get home, change into yoga pants and a T-shirt, and go outside to weed the vegetable garden. We just bought our house last fall, and the yard and landscaping needed a lot of work. We planted heirloom tomatoes, a variety of peppers, onions, raspberries, a blueberry bush, sunflowers, and catnip. While weeding, I'm surprised to find several random squash growing and a bunch of rogue tomatoes. Score for bonus plants!

7 p.m. — Done weeding and cleaning up the yard. We decide to do fast food for dinner, because I'm too lazy to cook once again. We go to Sonic. I get popcorn chicken and a frozen lemonade, R. gets a burger, fries, and a shake ($20.57). R. pays for dinner.

8:30 p.m. — After dinner I'm exhausted and head to bed extra early with my book. I'm reading a thriller right now, and it's getting good, but I fall asleep reading.

Daily Total: $28.26

Day Four

6 a.m. — Rise and shine! I feed the animals and get ready. R. is up early for an international conference call. He travels for work quite often, but when he's not traveling, he works from home. I make another smoothie for breakfast: strawberries, pineapple, coconut water, and vegan vanilla protein powder with caffeine. I send C. a quick Snapchat because I look cute for work today, and head to work.

10 a.m. — I take a break from work and text my sister about my niece's birthday party this weekend and then check my personal email while I munch on popcorn. Bookbub has a memoir about a blind cat today, so of course I buy the e-book for my Kindle. Our kitten is half-blind, and any story about a blind cat tugs at my heartstrings. $2.15

11:30 a.m. — R. meets me for lunch downtown today. We go to a Greek place near my office. I get a Greek salad with chicken and pita bread, R. gets a gyro and fries. We split a piece of baklava. R. pays for lunch ($18.63).

6 p.m. — I get off work and we go to our favorite bar to say goodbye to a bartender who is leaving. I have a glass of wine, buffalo wings, and a side salad. R. eats the majority of my wings and has a couple of craft beers. He pays for dinner. I want to stay and hang out, but I have a photo shoot in the morning and need the rest. We leave early and I head to bed around 8:30.

Daily Total: $2.15

Day Five

8 a.m. — I took a vacation day for my photo shoot, so I get to sleep in an extra two hours! I get up and get ready for my shoot, skipping breakfast so I don't feel bloated.

11 a.m. — I'm a bit late for my boudoir shoot since it's across town, but I know the photographer and she's fine with it. We have fun and shoot a nerdy Harry Potter–themed outfit. It takes me a bit to get home because of road construction (everything in Minnesota is under construction in the summer), and I'm starving by the time I get home.

1 p.m. — I decide to go get Chipotle for lunch, and C. surprises me and meets me. I order a veggie bowl with brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, pico de gallo, corn salsa, sour cream, cheese and lettuce, and a side of guacamole and chips. I eat half the bowl and all of the chips and guacamole. $11.16

1:45 p.m. — I say goodbye to C. and head over to Target to get my niece a birthday card. I find her a birthday card, a birthday card for my mom, and some random cards as well. I also get two gift bags for her gifts, because I hate wrapping boxes. I remember I need concealer, so I pick up NYX concealer and a trial-size Pixi Rose toner I have been wanting to try. I swing through the clearance section and score a black pencil skirt for $6. Finally, I go to the baby section and find an adorable purple tie-dye romper for my niece that I just can't pass up. $76.52

3 p.m. — I get home from all my adventures and crash on the couch for an hour.

5 p.m. — R. and I go check out a local craft brewery. We each get a sample flight and three pints of beer. We sit and play the new Wizards Unite game together (we are huge Harry Potter fans!) and listen to live music. R. also gets two cases of their craft soda to split with C. R. is really thoughtful and often picks up new craft soda for them to try. R. pays for the beer and soda, and I buy a pink Pride-themed brewery branded shirt. $20

9 p.m. — We meet up with some friends for a late dinner at a local dive bar. I order a rum and coke, R. gets a beer. We order food, a flatbread for R., and a blackened chicken wrap for me. We play pull tabs ($20) and win $108, so our meal is free!

Daily Total: $107.68

Day Six

9 a.m. — We sleep in a little, but the cats get R. up early (6 a.m.) as always to be fed. Eventually, I get up and make hash browns and toast for breakfast.

1 p.m. — We go to my sister's for my niece's first birthday party. It's rainbow-themed, so I wear one of my Pride shirts. They are having pulled pork for lunch, but I'm a vegetarian (mostly), so I load up on coleslaw, veggies and dip, and fruit. We have rainbow birthday cake for dessert, and I have a hard seltzer. I take lots of pictures for my sister while my niece opens her presents — she's very enthusiastic about gifts, and it's cute. We got her five new outfits (I might have gone overboard!) and a custom bunny stuffed animal I got on Etsy.

6 p.m. — My friend T. and I head out for the night to celebrate Pride! We head over to the festival grounds in Minneapolis, and R. is kind enough to drop us off, so we don't have to pay for an Uber. My friend got our tickets in advance, so I pay her back for them ($20). It's a variety show with drag performers and is headlined by TLC! I get French fries and a lemonade ($14) for dinner, and I share fries in exchange for some of my friend's cheese curds. I get two hard seltzers ($16), and we dance and sing to "Creep" and "Waterfalls" like it's 1994. $50

10 p.m. — We walk across the park and catch the fireworks show before R. comes to pick us up. We get home and I hop into bed right away.

Daily Total: $50

Day Seven

7 a.m. — Up bright and early for the Pride parade today. I get ready and put on extra glitter for the parade. My outfit consists of a pink, blue, and purple tank top (I identify as bisexual/queer) and unicorn shorts. R. brings me a breakfast sandwich from Sonic, and we head out the door with T., who's in a similar outfit and a matching tutu.

9:45 a.m. — We meet my sister, brother-in-law, and niece in downtown Minneapolis, and they are in matching rainbow outfits. We get there early to scout out a good spot to watch the parade. Minneapolis has the third largest pride celebration in the country. With this year being the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, they are anticipating an even bigger crowd of around 400,000 people.

11 a.m. — The parade starts! We buy my niece a rainbow flag to wave, and she giggles and happily waves it the entire time. I get a little misty-eyed this year watching the giant flags go by, feeling so supported by my family. I only came out three years ago, and I'm finally starting to feel like myself. $10

1:30 p.m. — After the parade is over, our group heads down to the festival amidst a giant crowd of people. I'm starving — the few pieces of candy I got during the parade were not enough. I get Mexican street corn and some cookie dough, as there were hardly any vegetarian options. We wander the festival until our feet start to hurt, then head home. $11

5 p.m. — I take a short nap when we get home and wake up famished. I make a huge plate of nachos with chips, cheese, black beans, tomatoes, salsa, and sour cream, which I share with R. We watch some TV, and later I have a Trader Joe's frozen fruit bar. We head to bed at our normal time, as R. will be up and out the door early to catch a flight the next morning.

Daily Total: $21

Suffice to say, there's a lot out there, and we want to help you cut through the clutter. From photo-editing apps to dating apps, here are our favorites in every category. Because, for whatever it is you want/need/dreamt about last night, I can guarantee, there's an app for it.

HotelTonight

The pitch: "Incredible last-minute hotel deals."

Next time you have a hotel to book, you might not want to book so far in advance. HotelTonight is an app that operates out of over 1,300 cities and offers last-minute deals on unsold rooms at all kinds of hotels. The way it works: the closer you get to check-in, the lower the deals. So if you can manage to wait to book your stay, it'll definitely be worth it.

Reading the news can be really, really stressful — but this app provides a thoughtful and unbiased lens at topics like gun control, immigration, healthcare, climate change, and media literacy to help users better understand the how and the why of timely issues, while also mitigating the stress of the daily news cycle. After the free week-long trial, it costs $19.99 every six months.

MySizeID

The pitch: "Measurement tools for life, on your smart phone."

As a person who hates trying things on in a dressing room, I almost exclusively do my shopping online. Despite the convenience, though, there's a major drawback — most things don't fit how they appear to onsite. Enter: MySizeID, which uses sensors to take your measurements and then syncs the data directly to a retailer’s sizing chart so you never have to guess what size you are.

The pitch: "Tinder for (girl) friends."

Making adult friends is hard AF, but this app makes it a lot easier. 6 Breakout Hairstyle Trends Everyone Will Be Wearing This Summer

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

When the warm weather hits and the fact that you're wearing a sundress and sandals proves it, the itch to chop all your hair off begins. But you may want to pump the breaks before jumping on your stylist's calendar, because there's an easier way to freshen up the cut you've got: Try a completely new style instead.

A fresh approach to styling, be it with a sleek braid, a bun, or a new padded headband, is a much less permanent way to switch up your look — and luckily, inspiration is everywhere. From Kristen Bell's baby bun to Tessa Thompson's pigtail braids, we've compiled six fresh and trendy summer hairstyles to fall back on when you're feeling that telltale urge to cut, ahead.

Low Bun

If you have a bob like Kristen Bell and you're trying to pack away the curling iron this summer, lean into her go-to style: the low bun. It's just as chic as any barrel-spun wave, will save you time, and can stand up to neck sweat.

Follow designer and influencer Tylynn Nguyen on Instagram for a full grid of low buns. Her feed is proof that this style complements every outfit.

Half Up Half Down

An updo for the indecisive, the classic half up-half down is the perfect style for summer because it keeps most of the hair down, with just the topmost layer pulled up and out of your face. "It's a quick and easy way to freshen up your hair," says celebrity stylist Jenny Cho. "It works best if you want to add a style, but don’t want to make it look like you put too much effort into doing your hair."

To style your hair in a half-up, you can make it piece-y with some strands pulled out on purpose, or go for a more polished high-and-tight pull-back like Joan Smalls.

The Bubble Ponytail

The full, teased ponytail was all the rage this spring, and for summer, we're seeing a variation on the same kind of pony with an added twist down the hair shaft: bubble accents. “I love a ponytail with texture," Cho tells us of the trend. "It's airy and fun. Plus, anyone can do it — you just keep adding subsections down the ponytail."

Stylist Marcus Francis calls this updo he did on actress Ali Wong the "Warrior Pony."

An Undone Updo

Hollywood's favorite low-key hairstyle — the messy updo — is perfect for every warm-weather occasion you have on your Google calendar. “As the weather gets nicer, you’re probably spending more time outdoors, with little downtime to switch up your hairstyle between occasions," says Francis. His recommendation for a style that can transition from day to night is an updo with a not-too-perfect, wispy finish. "This feels like a romantic summer look that can fit either a dressy or daytime vibe.”

This year, we're considering festival season a lasting summertime vibe, and the hair looks will stay relevant well through August. Here, hairstylist and makeup artist Brittany Sullivan shows how to elevate an ordinary French braid Coachella-style with pastel-pink clip-in color. Don't forget the purposefully playful strands around the ears.

A Statement Headband

We've seen delicate appliques everywhere this past spring, and statement barrettes took over New York Fashion Week last season, so it's no surprise that hair accessories continue to surge in popularity. “Accessories are really making a strong presence this year, and we’ll be seeing a lot more in summer 2019," says celebrity stylist Laura Polko. Currently, headbands are the accoutrements of choice, worn by everyone from Taylor Swift to your most-liked influencer on Instagram. The best news? Our favorite bands are budget-friendly — and way more affordable than a haircut.

“I love a loose braid or messy bun with a headscarf, especially for the hot summer days ahead,” says Cho. Suffice it to say, this knotted navy option could make even the sweatiest fourth-day style look chic as hell.

Extra-Long Braids

A braid is one of the easiest ways to make your hair look fancy without trying that hard. “Braids will always make for a classic style, especially during warmer weather," says Francis. Given the rising temps, we're channelling this polished, three-strand braid — as seen on Gigi Hadid — for every date night until further notice.

What's better than one braid? Two long pigtail braids, one spilling over each shoulder. Top the look off with a satin blazer and delicately curled baby hairs like Tessa Thompson.

Celeste's Hair Almost Looked Very Different In Season 2 Of Big Little Lies

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Celeste Wright, Nicole Kidman's character on Big Little Lies, is having a tough time. At the start of the second season, the Monterey mom is left reeling after the death of her abusive husband Perry. Now, four episodes in, we continue to witness her grieving process — which, so far, includes therapy, a one-night stand (or is it?) with a tattooed bartender, and Ambien.

According to Kidman, Celeste's grief almost led her to doing something even more dramatic than slapping her mother-in-law in the face: chopping her hair off. While chatting with Kidman, a Neutrogena ambassador, about her work with the brand, the actress let it slip that she seriously considered having Celeste undergo a major hair transformation before filming the second season of BLL.

The actress, who's also an executive producer on the show, notes that her vision for Celeste came while she was doing the emotional work for the character, specifically citing her violent and controlling relationship with Perry as a source for her physical appearance. It was largely about how Perry would've wanted Celeste to look — even down to the length of her belly-grazing red hair. "I came up with a whole story where he loved my hair," Kidman explained. "He wanted me to be like that and he didn't want my hair to be cut. At one point, I was thinking, Maybe I should cut my hair."

Ultimately, Kidman decided against the haircut. As much as it would make sense for Celeste to quite literally rid herself of the traumatic weight Perry caused her (something Jane did do almost immediately after his death), Kidman confirms her character isn't emotionally ready — at least, not yet. There's a lot more to come for Celeste in BLL 's second season, and let's just say we're more than eager for a scene where Celeste, in a moment of liberation, grabs the kitchen scissors and cuts off about a foot of her hair. We know Jane would approve.

How To Treat Every Type Of Scar, According To The Experts

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Scarring is never just skin deep — this is something I can vouch for. A bad fall in childhood meant having a skin graft on my knee, which ended up resembling a sewn-on patch that was a source of both fascination and disgust among my classmates. I was tasked with applying good old E45 Dermatological Cream to it every night, and over time, as I religiously massaged in that white ointment with its distinct scent until it disappeared like magic, it became a rather pleasant self-care ritual.

Over the years, my scar has minimized in appearance and the redness diminished, along with the residual shame I felt at being less than perfect. But if writing this piece has taught me anything, it's that I'm not alone. "Our initial emotional reactions towards a scar are often related to shock," notes Dr. Andrew Thompson, reader in clinical psychology at the University of Sheffield and British Skin Foundation spokesperson. "There also may be feelings of anxiety associated with thoughts of what the eventual scarring might look like. In addition, scarring can be associated with feelings linked to the event that caused the injury, such as anxiety, anger, and even shame. However, most emotional reactions should settle relatively quickly."

According to the experts, learning how to manage a scar is key to reducing its emotional repercussions. With that in mind, I asked some of the best dermatologists and aestheticians in the business for advice on how to treat the most common types of scarring.

Raised Scars

"Hypertrophic and keloid scars are two types of raised scars," explains Dr. Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist and author of The Skincare Bible: Your No-Nonsense Guide To Great Skin. "Both types occur due to overgrowth of dense, fibrous tissue after healing of a skin injury." However, there is some difference between them. "Generally speaking, hypertrophic scars are the same size as the wound that caused them," Dr. Mahto says. This could be as a result of a piercing, burn, or cut, for example. Keloid scars, however, "extend beyond the limits of the injury," Dr. Mahto says. "This type of scarring is more common in pigmented skin. They usually do not diminish by themselves and often require intervention to soften or flatten the areas."

Rick Woodin, head of R&D and chief scientist at ZO Skin Health, also points to professional procedures as a reliable option. "Treatment can include medicinal corticosteroid injections, freezing, surgical removal, laser therapy, creams, gels, or pressure dressings," he says. "Your dermatologist will advise on which is best for you."

Superficial Scars

"Superficial scars are those pesky red blotches you can get post-acne that don't seem to let up," Dr. Mahto explains. "Retinol is great for most skin types and works especially well for those who suffer from this sort of scarring." If you’ve been advised to avoid retinol — for example, if you’re pregnant or your skin is prone to chronic sensitivity — try a product with bakuchiol, which has been touted as a natural alternative for exfoliating and speeding up cell turnover.

Ice-Pick Scars

According to Woodin, as the name suggests, ice-pick scars are small, deep holes caused by acne that look as though the skin has been punctured with an ice pick. Sadly, when it comes to treating them, there is no miracle product that you can pick up off a shelf. "I would wholeheartedly recommend against throwing your money at creams, lotions, potions, and oils," Dr. Mahto says. "Despite what the packaging may claim, they will simply not be effective against such scarring. Skin care in this context would be a false economy; your money really would be better spent getting an expert opinion from a dermatologist." The National Health Service suggests punch excision or punch grafting as possible treatments, but it's always best to discuss your options with a professional.

Boxcar Scars

Boxcar scars are broad depressions with sharply-defined edges that create the appearance of a "crater" in the skin. "Treatments such as dermal rolling and laser will stimulate collagen type III to plump out the skin and smooth the acne depressions," says Dija Ayodele, aesthetician and founder of the Black Skin Directory. "The earlier this is done the better, as it’s much more challenging to treat old scars."

Rolling Scars

Similar to boxcar scars, rolling scars have a deep crater-like appearance, but with more sloped edges. Generally they can be treated the same way as boxcar scars, but in more extreme cases, cosmetic treatment is another option. Aesthetic doctor Dr. Sophie Shotter offers a variety of treatments, including filler, at her UK clinic, Illuminate. "I would always recommend filler used in combination with other procedures, and I’m a big fan of stimulating collagen to treat scarring," she says. "I use a resurfacing technique with a system called Venus Viva, which uses nanofractional radio frequency," said to heat tissue and encourage collagen production.

"Deeper scarring can potentially be improved over a longer period of time, but often a number of different treatments may be needed," says skin-care and laser specialist Debbie Thomas. "Lasers like the Erbium:YAG (Er:YAG) physically remove layers of skin, the idea being that by forming a wound and removing said layers, it forces the skin to regenerate at a much more optimum level. Light to moderate peels are best, as your skin is a living organ and can only take so much trauma."

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

"This is a common side effect of acne," says Ayodele. "Appearance-wise, they can appear quite flat but leave dark marks in patches or dots on the skin." Treatment options for this type of skin "staining" vary. "It can be treated topically using products that fade the dark patches, such as hydroquinone prescribed under medical supervision. You should also look for ingredients that inhibit and quell excess melanin pigment, such as licorice extract, vitamin C, niacinamide, bakuchiol, and retinol," says Ayodele. "Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily is also a must to prevent it getting any worse." Dr. Dennis Gross Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a clever multitasker; in addition to protecting skin from UVA and UVB rays, it also contains three forms of vitamin C to even out pigmentation.

When it comes to minimizing the impact of scars, no matter what they look like, consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson Dr. Thivi Maruthappu shares one vital piece of advice. "As tempting as it may be, it’s so important not to pick or squeeze a spot, as the pressure can drive inflammation and infection deeper into the skin," she says. "The same is true of picking at scabs, which can increase the chances of scarring, including hypertrophic scarring." And for those who find dealing with the emotional aspect of scarring particularly challenging, extra support is out there. "Help in managing scars is increasingly available through both specialist medical services and mainstream mental-health services," Dr. Thompson says.

In a perfect world — and if $$$ was no object — we’d try out every new beauty treatment without a second thought. Microneedling? Why not!Vampire facial? Sure! But in reality, most of us probably stay well within our respective comfort zone(s) and stick to what we know. And while there’s nothing wrong with that approach, we’re also all for exploring, researching, and ultimately trying new trending treatments and procedures.

That's why we’ve created a summer beauty bucket list, if you will, rounding up five beauty treatments we’re saying “yes” to before summer’s end. From European Wax Center 's at-home products that’ll turn your bathroom into a straight-up spa to trends we've seen elsewhere, like an indulgent hot-oil manicure fit for royalty (aka you), read on to find out what you should be trying this summer.

European Wax Center Bikini Wax With Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Wipes

If you’ve never waxed before, we get how it can seem daunting (especially on an area as sensitive as your bikini line), but the truth is, aside from some momentary discomfort, getting a wax (especially from a gentle and mindful waxer) is usually a great experience — and even better when you see the results. The worst part is actually what comes a week later: those red, painful bumps otherwise known as ingrown hairs. What if we told you that you could both prevent ingrown hairs and treat existing ones with one daily swipe? Well, these wipes ($28.50) promise to do just that thanks to their infused alpha and beta hydroxy acids, which exfoliate and support cell turnover. Pick 'em up after your next wax at European Wax Center. You’re welcome.

Keratin Lash Lift

If you’re partial to lash extensions or have been seriously considering them for a special occasion — or, simply, a mascara- and smudge-free life this summer — here's an alternative that won’t shed or flake off. A keratin lash lift is a “perm”-like process for your lashes that involves curling them around a silicone rod (the rod size varies depending on the look you’re going for) and then setting the curl with a lifting solution. As if you were perming your hair, you’ll want to avoid wetting your lashes (and applying mascara) for 24 hours post-treatment, and you’ll always want to ask your lash specialist to perform a patch test first to avoid any potential allergic reactions to the solution.

European Wax Center Mask Me Hydrogel Face Mask

We love a face mask as much as the next person, but not all masks are created equally. Case in point: European Wax Center's Mask Me Hydrogel Face Mask ($9.50 or 3 for $24) features kelp extract to hydrate and cucumber and chamomile extract to calm and soothe the skin. Plus, the brand's proprietary Hair Growth Minimizing technology on the mask's lower half is made specifically to reduce the appearance and thickness of pesky facial hairs in between waxes (we're looking at you, upper lip). So if you find yourself with parched summer skin (thanks a lot, sun), pick up this mask from your nearest EWC.

Hot-Oil Manicure

After a cold, dry winter, your hands could probably use some extra TLC. Treat them to a hot-oil manicure, which involves submerging your hands into hot essential oils — the formula varies depending on where you go and might involve olive, almond, vitamin E, or tea-tree oils — for optimal absorption; other times, your manicurist might wrap your hands in the aforementioned skin-softening ingredients. During the treatment, your hands will also likely get a good scrub-down and massage. Unlike traditional manicures that often involve harsh, skin-drying solvents and formaldehyde-infused polishes that aren’t great for your nail beds, this treatment will bring your nails — and hands — back to their former glory. All said and done, what you’re left with is shiny, stronger nails that’ll last for weeks.

Lip Blushing

First there was microblading, then there were faux freckles, and now there’s Lip Blushing — a new technique pioneered by Atlanta-based cosmetic tattoo artist Gabrielle Rainbow that uses a custom blend of pigments to add definition and subtle color to the lips. Sure, it might sound appealing not having to reapply your favorite lipstick every morning — and skip the sticky mess that is a lip gloss in the summer heat — but there are some things to consider, too. Like with all tattoos, there can be a risk of infection, scarring, and allergic reaction, and it’s always important to find a tattoo artist familiar with the technique.

How You Can Help Migrant Children Detained At The Border

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Migrant children are facing horrifying conditions while in detention at Border Patrol facilities along the Southern border, including unsanitary environments, overcrowding, and cruel treatment.

Immigration advocates say that children are being kept in facilities that weren’t built with the purpose of holding adults for a long period of time, much less kids, or in tents. Several reports say minors have gone weeks in detention without access to adequate food, space to sleep, or even basic sanitary necessities such as soap or toothpaste — which is in direct violation of the 1997 Flores settlement agreement.

Dire conditions and mistreatment at detention facilities go back to long before the Trump administration. The immigration enforcement apparatus has been in place for years, through both Republican and Democratic administrations, although outrage at what many are calling human rights abuses has reached a fever pitch as President Donald Trump continues to push his hardline immigration agenda.

The issue is not limited to the border: Advocates, lawmakers, and historians have called immigration detention facilities across the nation currently holding children "concentration camps " and have demanded that the Trump administration take action.

Several of the 25 Democratic presidential candidates — including Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Kamala Harris; former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro; and South Bend, IN, Mayor Pete Buttigieg — visited Homestead, the nation's only private for-profit detention center for migrant kids and youth, following the first primary debate. During the second night of the debate, author Marianne Williamson said the conditions at the detention centers should be called "collective child abuse," while former Gov. John Hickenlooper said of separating migrant families: "In Colorado, we call that kidnapping."

While many of the candidates are promising to change the system when (or if) they are in office, this crisis can make many feel powerless. Some have even tried to directly donate diapers, soap, toothbrushes, and other necessities, only to be turned away by Border Patrol because federal agencies aren't allowed to legally accept donated items except in certain circumstances. So, how can you actually make a difference? Ahead, we outline several ways you can help today.

Support advocacy organizations.

RAICES: This Texas-based organization offers free and low-cost legal services to immigrant children and families. Donate here and sign up as a volunteer here.

KIND (Kids In Need of Defense): The organization provides legal representation to migrant children and lobbies to ensure their rights are protected. Donate here.

Pueblo Sin Fronteras: This group provides humanitarian aid and shelter to migrants on their way to the U.S. Donate here.

Al Otro Lado: This bi-national organization provides legal services to deportees and migrants in Tijuana, Mexico, including deportee parents whose children remain in the U.S. Donate here.

The Florence Project: This Arizona-based organization offers free legal services to people in immigration custody. Donate here.

Justice in Motion: Formerly known as Global Workers Justice Alliance, this group connects attorneys and nongovernmental organizations across the U.S., Mexico, and Central America to find parents who have been deported without their children and help them reunite. Donate here.

Texas Civil Rights Project: This organization has been using legal advocacy and litigation to help families separated at the border. Donate here.

Border Angels: This California-based organization supports San Diego County's immigrant population and focuses on issues related to the U.S.-Mexico border. Donate here.

Neta: This Texas-based grassroots group helps asylum seekers on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Donate here.

South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project (ProBAR): This project of the American Bar Association is currently supporting over 1,000 unaccompanied children in detention centers across South Texas. Donate here.

Fronterizo Fianza Fund: This project, run by the Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee, assists families in coming up with the bond money needed for a detained immigrant to be released. Donate here.

National Immigrant Justice Center: This program fights for policy reform and provides legal services to immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers. Donate here.

Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center: This El Paso, TX-based organization provides legal representation to migrants who otherwise can't afford it. Volunteer here and donate here.

More ways to help: ActBlue Charities has set up a link that allows you to donate to 14 different organizations, including the ACLU, United We Dream, the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project, and more. Donate here.

Contact your elected officials.

Don't underestimate the power of pressuring your elected representatives. On Thursday, Congress voted to pass a $4.6 billion humanitarian aid bill for the detained migrant children — a measure President Donald Trump is expected to sign. But there is still work to be done, and you should make your voice heard by reaching out to your lawmakers. If you don't know where to start, you can read our guide to contacting Congress here.

Educate yourself and share accurate information.

Here is a helpful guide to the journalists, advocates, and experts you should follow on Twitter to be up-to-date with everything related to the immigration system. You can also use social media to show your opposition to detention centers and signal-boost accurate information.

If you are worried about the impact of the immigration enforcement apparatus in your immediate community, you can attend Know Your Rights trainings in your area. These trainings inform you on what your constitutional rights are (regardless of your immigration status) and how to practice safe bystander intervention when needed.

Attend a protest.

If you're able and willing to, considering getting out there and protesting. MoveOn, United We Dream, American Friends Service Committee, and Families Belong Together are organizing nationwide #CloseTheCamps rallies to take place on Tuesday, July 2. Find an event near you here.

The 5 Products Kristen Bell Always Uses For Fresh, Dewy Skin

Like her hair (arguably the cutest blonde bob in Hollywood), Kristen Bell's skin is perfection. The consummate girl-next-door could still pass for a teenager, just as fresh-faced and bubbly as she was when she got her start as an actress nearly twenty years ago. Desperate to know what type of filler or brand of vampire-blood cream to credit, we talked to the woman who has been touching Bell's skin since her first-ever acting role: her longtime makeup artist Simone Siegl.

"I met Kristen on her first movie, a low-budget Hallmark TV movie called The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay," Siegl tells us. "Back then, I was 23 years old, and she was also a baby at 20, and the two of us just clicked immediately. Soon after, she got her big break on Veronica Mars, and we've been working together ever since."

For just about every press appearance and red carpet over the past two decades, Siegl has been by Bell's side — and has also helped her masterfully curate the perfect skin-care routine, the five essential products that keep her skin fresh, tight, and glowy. Courtesy of Siegl, we caught a glimpse of what's inside Bell's medicine cabinet, ahead...

Clarisonic

"Kristen does the prep work to keep her skin fresh, clean, and hydrated," Siegl tells us. "She's on the drier side, so we both love the Clarisonic cleansing brush to gently exfoliate her skin. Before I get to her house, Kristen always uses her brush, so her face is clean but not stripped, then I can start right into layering the hydration."

Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Mask

"My second step is always a face mask," says Siegl. "We use Tata Harper's Hydrating Floral one. I also love the Sisley Black Rose mask, but as Kristen has gotten older, she has become a bit more ingredients-conscious and prefers clean products when she can. So, I use the Tata Harper on her and any other clients who want the most natural option."

Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum

"We'll wash off the mask, and layer on a hyaluronic acid," explains Siegl of step three. "I love using a hyaluronic acid on the skin right after washing off a mask, because it adds an instant bouncy glow to the face. I've tried a few different serums, but for Kristen, the Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum is the one I always use."

True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil

Next, Siegl pats oil on over the hyaluronic acid serum. "I like the True Botanicals True Radiance Oil, which I found when Kristen told me she was trying to go more organic with her skin-care routine," Siegl says. "It's amazing because Kristen's skin is dry and very light in tone, and I think adding this oil is the main key to keeping it dewy and youthful."

Créme de la Mer

"Kristen has been obsessed with Créme de la Mer forever," Siegl says. "She loves the thickness and the heavier texture of it, so we really slather it on, and it acts like a primer, if you will. Then, we start her makeup. But that base is the most important part, and honestly, it's nothing different than what she does on her own. Kristen takes very good care of her skin."

The Powerful Reason Laverne Cox Goes Makeup-Free

Image may be NSFW.

Makeup used to be Laverne Cox 's armor.

"I needed to put on my face to get ready to be harassed on the street, to deal with the world," Cox, the actress and activist who became the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her role on Orange is The New Black, tells Refinery29. "I always needed makeup to feel safe. When you are a trans woman and you walk down the street and get called a man, it can be a mind fuck. I felt like a failure — like people weren’t seeing my womanhood."

In those early stages of her transition, makeup was how Cox learned to connect with who she really was. "In 1997, I was invited to take part in a pageant at the Pyramid Club in the West Village," she says. "That was the first time I was fully femme, with a full face of makeup and blown-out hair and a dress and high heels. It felt like a release. It’s just who you are."

As Cox experimented with her look, she gained more confidence in expressing her own femininity. "Going blonde for the first time in the late '90s was a pivotal moment for me," she says. "It was a Beyoncé in Destiny's Child- type of look. The beast was unleashed."

But 20 years later, Cox's relationship with makeup and beauty has radically changed. Now, it serves as a tool to enhance, rather than to hide. "On a day-to-day basis, I always want the makeup to be about celebrating what I look like," she says, adding that it's just as important to her to embrace what she looks like without it. "I’ve gone on dates with no makeup on. I’ve gone to auditions. I never would have done that a few years ago. I’ve evolved how I feel about myself through my transition."

I’ve gone on dates with no makeup on. I’ve gone to auditions. I never would have done that a few years ago.

According to Cox, her decision not to undergo facial feminization surgery — a series of procedures aimed at adding traditionally feminine features to the face — has also helped her feel more comfortable in her skin. "What I know now is that if someone can look at me and realize that I’m trans, then that’s a beautiful thing, because trans is beautiful," Cox says. "Transition is about making your outsides and insides match... Sometimes it’s not about going to the plastic surgeon to fix things. The plastic surgeon can change what’s on the outside, but you still need to do work to improve the inside."

That sense of self-assurance can also be seen in her on-screen work, especially with her role as Sophia Burset on OITNB. To play that character, Cox was required to spend hours on camera without makeup, which was a real tipping point for feeling more comfortable in her skin. "When I auditioned for Orange, I just wore some pressed powder and that’s it," Cox says. " With acting, stripping off makeup for a character is for the character and it’s for the truth. Orange was the manifestation of the work I had done on myself up to that point."

For as much confidence as she radiates, Cox is quick to admit that she's constantly working on her own self image. So, when Olay approached her to take part in the brand's Two-Week Moisture Ribbons Body Wash Challenge, which called for her to use the brand's Moisture Ribbons Body Wash — and no other moisturizers whatsoever — it definitely gave her pause.

"When I was a kid, my mom would tell me, you need to put a lot of lotion on or you'll be ashy," Cox says in an interview to promote her brand partnership. "Because of that first memory, I do spend a lot of moisturizing my body. I'd be running late, putting moisturizer on... but with the Olay body wash, I don't need to do that any more. I'm shocked."

Cox, who says she took part in the challenge to prepare for her appearance at the World Pride opening ceremony in New York City this weekend, wants to do her part to keep the spirit of the event alive long after the parade. "For me, Pride is something that is year-round," she says. "There’s going to be something that comes up every day that's going to make us doubt our existence, but feeling good about yourself is a daily practice. "

10 Dermatologist-Approved Ways To Prevent Bikini Rash This Summer

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

We’ve made a national pastime out of complaining about bikini shopping. But if you ask us, far more excruciating (and less discussed) is what it takes to prepare your body for bikini shopping — and for wearing a bikini every single time thereafter.

No, we're definitely not talking about rigorous fitness routines; after all, the first and only step to getting a beach body is to have a body. This is about the measures we take to clear the hairs that insist on cropping up just outside the bikini line. Whether you shave, wax, or sugar, none of it is pleasant — and nearly all methodologies can spur redness, bumps, and irritation (which, frankly, we’re not convinced looks any better than exposed pubes).

As New York-based dermatologist and dermatopathologist Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, explains, "Bikini rash, also known as folliculitis, happens because of inflammation around the hair follicle that occurs after shaving or waxing. Because the hair is generally coarser in the bikini area relative to other parts of the body, irritation from shaving or waxing is more common."

It’s a raw deal, but our quest for smooth skin prevails. So this swim season, why not circumvent the whole masochistic cycle by preventing bikini rash before it sets in? Two dermatologists help us formulate a game plan, ahead.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Dove Exfoliating Body Polish Body Scrub

New York City-based dermatologist Hadley King, MD, says to make sure the skin is soft and gently exfoliated before attempting any kind of hair removal in the area. "Spend about 10 minutes in warm water to help soften the outer layer of skin, making it easier to remove hair and decreasing the risk of razor burn," she says. "It's also helpful to gently and lightly exfoliate with a warm wet washcloth or a gentle moisturizing scrub, like Dove's Exfoliating Body Polish with crushed macadamia and rice milk, which helps to release any ingrown hairs stuck under the surface of dead skin prior to shaving."

Oui Shave The Rose Gold Single-Blade Razor

At-home hair removal can include waxing, but if you'd like to skip irritation from the very first step, then we suggest going with a razor — a safety razor, to be exact. You may have resigned yourself to the fact that razor burn and ingrown hairs are a part of your past, present, and future, but this single-blade tool will change all of that. Thanks to the double-edge design, the razor cuts off the hair at a blunt angle, without pulling or dragging on the skin, so it won't cause irritation or razor bumps, ever.

Gillette Venus Platinum Extra Smooth Metal Handle Women's Razor

Dr. King prefers this particular razor for the bikini area because of its thoughtful design. "Look for a razor with multiple blades to disperse the pressure, a pivoting head that will adjust to all of your body's curves, soothing strips to help protect the skin, and an ergonomic handle that fits your hand," she says.

Kneipp Almond Blossom Shower Foam

For those who shave the bikini area, Dr. Mudgil suggests a few in-shower tweaks to help cut down on bikini rash. To start, use a new, sharp razor (whether you prefer the drugstore multi-blade options or a single blade) and a generous dose of shaving cream, like this foam, which turns into a cream-like consistency upon contact with skin. Then, try giving your bikini area a contrast shower. “Shaving while taking a hot or warm shower helps relax the muscles under the skin, open pores, and soften hair, which makes shaving easier and less traumatic,” he says. “Rinsing with cold water after shaving helps soothe the skin and close pores, which reduces post-shaving irritation.”

Dove Body Wash Mousse with Rose Oil

For a more budget-friendly option, Dr. King likes this mousse that doubles as both a body wash and a shaving cream. "With glycerin to hydrate and stearic acid as an emollient, it's able to moisturize and protect the skin," she says. "Stearic acid has been shown to protect the skin's surface against water loss and support the skin's protective barrier, and the rose oil provides a light, fresh fragrance."

S.W. Basics Aloe Vera Powder

Dr. Mudgil often gives patients who suffer from bikini rash a mild hydrocortisone lotion to apply right after shaving. “Aloe gels and creams are also helpful,” he says. This genius aloe-leaf powder can be mixed with water to create a gel, or stirred in with chilled chamomile tea to make a soothing mask.

Fur Skincare Fur Oil

For some people, plant extracts and essential oils can cause allergic reactions, says Dr. Mudgil. But for us, the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial jojoba, grapeseed, clary sage, and tea-tree oils in this blend proved to be soothing to skin. (As always, YMMV.)

Carter + Jane The Everything Oil

Packed with prickly pear seed oil, slathering on a few drops of this multi-use oil will not only ensure that this delicate area of skin doesn't get inflamed, but also get rid of bumps and prevent any scarring or irritation after shaving.

Silk'N Silk'n Flash&Go Infinity Hair Removal Device

If bumps, inflammation, and rashes persist even after taking Dr. Mudgil’s precautions, he offers one last solution: “Laser hair removal is magical and what I recommend to all my patients who suffer from razor bumps,” he says. Though in-office treatments require multiple sessions and thousands of dollars, this new at-home device (already a best-seller in international markets) promises to stymie hair growth for less, using galvanic energy to widen the pore and light pulses to zap new hair growth.

The Cheap Fitness Deals To Take Advantage Of This July

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

In the summertime, you probably want to spend as much time outside as possible, meaning the gym membership you ambitiously signed up for in January won't get as much action. But here's the thing: while everyone is traveling and enjoying the warm weather, it's actually the perfect time to take advantage of your gym membership. And if you don't have one yet, now's a great time to sign up, because there are tons of discounts and sales happening in July and all summer long.

Whether you're hopelessly devoted to boutique fitness or are more of a weight room person, ahead are the cheap gyms and workouts to hit up this July:

Equinox

The luxe fitness chain is providing an exclusive July offer on memberships. Part of the membership initiation fee, which can be between $300 and $500, will be discounted or waived entirely if you sign up during this month, and they'll prorate your July monthly fee. Not convinced it's worth the hefty price tag? New members also get a complimentary fitness assessment, personal training session, and Pilates session.

Planet Fitness

If you're a teen (meaning you're ages 15-18), you can go to Planet Fitness for free during the summer months as part of their Teen Summer Challenge. You can work out as many times as you want at one Planet Fitness location and pay absolutely nothing. Grownups still have to pay the $10 a month, though.

Flywheel

To align with the epic Tour de France bike race that happens in July, the indoor cycling class Flywheel is hosting a "Tour de Fly " challenge from July 8-28. During that time, you can take as many Flywheel classes as you'd like, and they'll tally up your total Power Score. The person with the highest score can win a Flywheel Home Bike, which is a $1,699 value. If that sounds too competitive for your liking, there are other prizes that will be awarded to people who complete at least nine Flywheel classes during that time.

ClassPass

ClassPass newbies can try a membership complete with 35 credits (worth 4-8 classes) for free. Technically, this promotional offer is always available, but it's a great idea to give it a whirl during the summer. When everyone is away and vacationing, boutique classes tend to be less crowded. So, you'll have a better chance at snagging a hot-ticket ClassPass slot during July versus, say, January.

Barre3

If your summer travel schedule has you on the road every weekend between now and August, consider signing up for the Barre3 Anywhere Challenge. From July 1-28, you can sign up for access to stream free Barre3 workouts from anywhere. The routines range from 10-30 minutes, and they also host live workouts on Instagram and Facebook on Fridays.

New York Sports Club

Join New York Sports Club during the month of July, and they'll waive this month's membership fees, which typically cost between $44 and $99 a month depending on the number of locations you select. In other words, you don't have to pay anything until August.

Blink Fitness

While Blink Fitness is known for being very affordable, their initiation fees are surprisingly expensive. (In New York City, for example, one Manhattan location's start-up fee is $99.) Luckily, during the month of July, you can sign up for just one dollar — meaning you don't have to pay for the fees or the month's rate.

Our Inner Desires Will Come Out During The New Moon & Solar Eclipse

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

This Tuesday is an astrologically eventful day — we have both a new moon in Cancer and a total solar eclipse. The last total solar eclipse was two years ago, in August 2017. While the last total solar eclipse could be seen in North America, this eclipse can be seen in South America: fully in Chile and Argentina, and partially in neighboring countries. In fact, some people are calling this eclipse “the Great South American Eclipse,” while the 2017 eclipse was called “the Great American Eclipse.” That means you won’t be able to see this eclipse from anywhere in the United States, although you can watch it online.

The good news, however, is that you will be able to see the new moon. That’s because solar eclipses only happen during a new moon. Astrologer Lisa Stardust explains, “Solar eclipses are very potent new moons in which the moon blocks the sun’s light from shining on the earth. During a regular new moon, also called a dark moon, we cannot see light on earth because the moon is aligned with the sun, blocking the moon from being visible. In an eclipse, it’s the same situation, but longer.”

This particular new moon and total solar eclipse will be “an emotionally intense luminary that serves as a wonderful release of frustrations within,” Stardust says. It falls in Cancer, one of the four cardinal signs of the zodiac. “Cardinal signs, such as Cancer, are ‘doers.’ They are the initiators of the zodiac,” Stardust explains. “Cancer, in particular, is a water sign that is ruled by the moon, which means it’s emotional — but likes to keep going and flowing as fast as the moon changes signs (every 2.5 days) and the waves crash. The moon controls the tides, so Cancer really has a hold on our bodily reactions because we are mostly made of water.”

The solar eclipse “will have an intense hold us — but not like we think,” Stardust says. While the luminary will serve as a release, she reminds us, “‘release’ can be orgasms too! It doesn’t have to mean a total emotional breakdown.”

This particular eclipse is an especially good one for orgasms. “This eclipse will only aspect rebel planet Uranus, which makes it a great time to connect to your inner desires — the ones you felt that you could never openly discuss,” Stardust says. “Embracing our freaky and kinky sides will be beneficial and give us the motivation to own our truth and be ourselves without judgement.”

If you’ve been considering making a sexual fantasy a reality, now is the time to do it. “Passions will be at a high, as well as the desire to consensually sexually experiment (within one’s comfort zone),” Stardust advises. “Be sure to have a safe word handy if things get too intense!”

There are certain people you will never forget are Canadian, like Justin Bieber and Drake (the rapper literally wore a sweatshirt to broadcast it). Others, though, are more subtle and surprising.

In no industry has the Canadian invasion been more welcome, though, than Hollywood. Americans may be completely ignorant about Canadian geography or other cultural facts, but we're well aware of the steady influx of handsome men named Ryan and other talented folks that stream down from the land of mounties, loonies, and toonies.

Some of your favorite stars just so happen to hail from north of the U.S. border. Get a load of these maple leafs who are all that and a side of syrup. In honor of Canada Day, we welcome our Canadian overlords.

"How hot is too hot?" This is a real query I typed into my Google search bar one humid morning while vacationing in Tulum, Mexico. In actuality, it was a mild day by Tulum standards — a mere 84 degrees at 9 a.m. that grew to a sweltering 95 degrees by mid-day. It was the kind of weather I'd typically use as an excuse to sit around watching reruns of Law & Order: SVU with a fan pointed directly at me. But since we were on vacation, I thought I'd use the opportunity to test some of my long-wear makeup favorites.

From Fenty Beauty's ultra-matte concealer to C'est Moi's $8 eyeshadow crayon, these products were made to stand up to the summer's sweatiest days, but can they hold up through hours of biking and swimming in the sweltering sun? Press play to find out.
